Folding Mirrors speed and sound of them!

Featured Replies

Rather than hijack another thread, the topic of mirrors was brought up.

When my mirrors fold in and out they sound like the motors are struggling a bit and the joint sounds dry like plastic on plastic.

On previous cars I have owned and driven the mirrors always tend to roll out with a lot less resistance.

I have checked them today by stood at the front of the car ( OCD I know) but the drivers mirrors folds in a split second slower than the passenger side.

Does anyone else think their mirrors are the same as this?

I was hoping they would slacken off in time ....

Mine exactly the same. Drivers side mirror folds a bit slower. Also creaks. Passanger side is fine or less noticable.

Same on my Hyundai - the passenger mirror is marginally quicker. Probably the same mechanism!

Might be a lot of reasons. I can imagine a drivers side mirror has more adjustment (other motors) which could cause the small delay. Might be something else as well but I wouldn't worry to much about it.

The motor for folding surely should be the same.

Wonder if the same mirror side (uk drivers) is slower on left hand drive cars ???

I meant different motors for the adjustments, which could possibly be a liitle bit heavier and therefor be harder to move. I assume the folding part is identical.

If you look closely when they are folded, there is a rubber lip seal around the pivot that appears a bit frayed as if it was rubbing on the mirror casing, which could make the bad sound described - I keep meaning to try a bit of seal conditioner like Gummi Pfledge on it.

Mine crackles too, especially noticable at -15 or less (might be the same now at +10, maybe I got used to it)

Do you think a silicone spray would help here?

Do you think a silicone spray would help here?

There are 2 rubber seals i have found which seem to be the root cause of the "noises" while folding. These rubber seals are bone dry.

I have treated these with some silicone spray today which has removed the plastic to plastic noise and motor strain. The speed remains the same but sound much better.

There's your answer - nice one Rick!

Awesome, will try it! Right now! :)

Wouldnt greasing in exposed place like this attract dirt and in time make it even worse?

A graphite based lubricant might be a better choice.

yes it may do. though the stuff i used is not tacky at all.

Cant say ive noticed mine sounding like that .. I did however turn off the automatic folding on day one.... Only fold them when I think they need folding ..

I'll monitor my mirrors for this. If necessary, I will try some GT85 lubricant spray that contains PTFE which hangs around once the lubricant itself has evaporated away.

Brilliant stuff! I always carry a can of it in the car - for work purposes mind...... :notme:

Castrol Red Rubber grease :)

Castrol Red Rubber grease :)

I tend to use this occasionally on my rubber gimp suit, works a treat!!

Oooo Maaaatron

did the silicon spray catch dirt later on? I have the sound like others.

No it did not as far as I can tell. Silicon spray is not that sticky as other lubricants.

It does help but some sounds are still there. Spray some silicon spray and then just ignore it. ;)

just been outside to look....

The seals still seem clean enough.. the noise is not there but the drives mirror is still a split second quick than the pax side

I have not treated the seals since i posted the above photos etc on the thread.
