Glow plug warning light flashing and the car shuts off

Featured Replies

Late last night I was 2 mins into driving when my dash lit up like a Christmas tree and the car lost all power and stopped, the glow plug light was flashing and obviously the engine management light was on. Waited 5 mins and the car started but 10 - 15 seconds down the road on the way back home it happened again. Managed to get home due to only being about 1 mile from home but had to do the process above to get her there.

Anyone had the same thing happened or have an idea on what it could be or things I can check?

Get the codes read.

Check the negative battery lead where it attaches to the strut turret. Make sure the connection is clean and tight.

Update. The last few days the cars has been fine, the morning after the car showed the fault i topped up the oil as it was a little low and it started fine. I left it ticking over for a while and then took her out and it drove perfectly. Yesterday again it was perfectly fine and after work I went to see my mate at his work so he could get the error codes.

These were 18009 & 16706

They were cleared and off I went and things were fine until this morning when I went outside to start the car to go to work. The car turned over but wouldn't start and the same lights were coming on, the engine management light, glow plug light, asr and also red flashing oil light.

18009 is usually related to relay J322 under the dash (relay position 15). Check it's not loose as this is not unknown! If the relay is loose or faulty it could be throwing the other (16706) code up.

Also check the fuse links on top of the battery as they can develop almost invisible hairline cracks causing intermittent connection.

Crank sensor = engine speed sensor = G28

What year and engine code is the car? For 2003 and 2004 I'm seeing 038957147E listed, for 2005-2007 038957147F.  e.g. Item (8) here, assuming you mean for the vRS in your profile.

I would be checking that the engine is charging properly and then inspect the thin alternator wire that goes through a connector just under the battery area.
