Scratched - Best Way Of Dealing?

Featured Replies

Not a happy bunny :(

Somehow, a scratch has appeared along my driver door, fortunately it seems to be a paint scratch only with no damage to the metal.

So, I'm after a bit of advice about the best way of mending it - I have the touch up paint, and someone suggested using a cocktail stick to apply it, rather than a brush to get the paint into the scratch, but if there is any more advice anyone can give me I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks!

Tried T-cut or similar

Try Meguiars Scratch-X which is a light abrasive or AutoGlym resin polics (slightly harsher) followed by a coat of Swissol. For me, it didn't quite remove the offending scratch fully but you would really have to 'know' where the scratch was before to find it.

Hope this helps.........

Cheers

Thanks for both the suggestions - both Meguiars and T-Cut seem to suggest that they are fine for surface scratches - the bit I read about T-Cut said it would remove scratches if you couldn't feel an indentation if you ran your fingernail over it - but my scratch seems to be deeper.

Remember that any abrasive will remove the lacquer coat on top of a metallic finish. Ideally, once you have removed the scratch you should re-coat with lacquer, but failing that you MUST keep a good coat of wax on top otherwise the paint will oxidise and look sh1te.

Good luck!

Has the scratch gone as deep as the primer coat ?

Geoff - yes it has. Doesn't look like it has gone down to bare metal though.

looks like it might be a bodyshop job or try to get a quote for it from a company like chips away they might be able to sort somthing out for you

It sounds like someone's keyed the car. That would really annoy me...

I have SO little faith in my touching-up ability (on the car, not on women) that if I have a major scratch to deal with, I'd always visit a bodyshop/dealer...

Alex - Getting excited?? Only 5 hours to go. :D

5 hrs your joking only 4hrs and 46mins me excited nah :D :D

Well, as its down to the primer, there's only 2 realistic options, as you'll never get an acceptable finish with a touch-up brush.

1. A Bodyshop. Nuff Said.

2. A company like "ChipsAway". They sorted my drivers door after some scratched my drivers door, and a damn fine job they did too. The scratch was around 12 Inches in total, it cost me

With ChipsAway you get the best results if they can work 'to and from' something ie they sorted a scuff on my wife's previous car, a Lupo, they were working from the bottom of the door to the bump strip half way up. As the bump strip breaks your view of the panel, any slight variations in finish are virtually unnoticable. If the scratch is right in the middle of a large panel a bodyshop may be a better bet.
