Would I notice a big difference swapping a 1.6 for a 1.2?

Featured Replies

I currently have a 1.6 petrol automatic Roomster, and am wanting to find a good second hand replacement. Petrol engine, less fussy about transmission but would possibly prefer manual.

The vast majority of second hand models seem to be 1.2, with the few  1.6 being diesel.

Would I notice the difference between 1.2 and 1.6? I do mainly city driving, with a motorway trip (120 miles or 360 miles) about every 6 weeks.

If you choose 1.2tsi it comes in two power outputs, 86bhp or 105bhp.I find my 86bhp adequate but if you lug a load around choose the 105bhp. After a 1.6 you may find the 1.2 turbos not quite so linear in their power outputs. I feel that the turbo engines being smaller capacity, even with the turbos seem to run out of puff on long steep inclines. I found this when I changed from my ordinary aspirated 1.6 Fiat Multipla to a 1.2tsi Roomie. There is a 1.2 non-turbo 3-cylinder also which some say is best avoided

Hi,

I recently got a 1.2 TSi DSG 105 and it goes very nicely. Love it.

Can't compare to any other Roomster but with the same power output (albeit Petrol rather than Diesel Horses) as my T4 2.5TDi Caravelle, it is much nippier and faster up hills. Not moving anything like the same weight helps.

The 1.6 16V petrol engine develops 105bhp.

If you go for the 105bhp 1.2TSI engine (i.e. not the 86bhp version), I doubt you'll notice much difference.

Mine's the 1.2 TSI DSG 105 and I love it.  The engine is a jewel and DSG is the icing on the cake.

I think you'll find the 1.2 tsi adequate in power and smoother, quieter than the 1.6 tbh.

Despite having a turbo, the TSI's motor pulls smoothly from low revs.

Thank you very much for all this. In truth, I don't understand much of it, but I feel I can happily look for a 1.2 tsi 105bhp with no worries!

Which is good because most on the used car market seem to have this engine!

They will do on newer cars. The 1.2 tsi replaced the 1.6 at the facelift time.

Get a test drive in one. You cant really tell its a 1.2 tbh
