Knurring wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

I have a knurling sound from left side in the front (may be) in a little  turn right on the steering.

May be the left bearing?

Have someone experience about this?

Jack the car up, spin the wheel and hold the spring, if it feels rough and vibrating then it could be the bearing, if the spring feels nice and smooth with no virating then its probably not the bearing.

Thanks! I´ll try that.

Rear its easy, but in front?

When its jacked up, you should get more than enough clearance to get your hand in and feel.

72mm is correct if car have power assisted steering. If no- then 66mm. And brake disc diam.also should be keeped in mind when choosing ID for bearing.

Just idea: http://webcat.schaeffler-aftermarket.com/web/schaeffler/en_NO/PKW/106/applicationSearch.xhtml

Mine original front bearings (FAG) got noisy at 165k km right / 220k km left. In both cases were absolutely NO "feelable" play when grabbed and tested them by hands.

Tool is correct? I.e., two "half-moon-washers" to press to bearing outer race, against toothed guard ring?

Guard ring MUST click into wheel bearing housing. If no- then bearing will came out because press-fit for it is quite light.

And watch-out for ABS sensor; lucky, they're quite cheap ;-)

I can't get the sensor out! I have tried to bend both from under and upside. I think I will make a steel bit in my lathe with ad cut away little (a slide - don't know the name in english) so the sensor came trough? I bought en new one for safety. ButI will see...?  And I got the half moon things and some pins. Hope to get the old out!?

The sensors can be awful to remove!

I've never snapped one yet but probably spent more time than I should have removing them.

I soak the full area in WD40 or similar and get pliers at the very bottom where the bolt goes and wiggle a little bit back and farward while applying more WD40. It will come out you just need to be patient.

^ 100% true. Took me 45min one side and 1H another side to get them out. A lot of WD40 and careful twisting.

Will be ok. 0.4m spanner will do job- but at first moment will be hard, because guard ring is rusted in groove; then- "crack!!" and spanner can be turned normally and bearing comes out.

For installing of bearing- if support washer have recess for ABS sensor then no need to take sensor out.

So much trouble to get the sensor out! No good!

I think I will make a ring with a longitudinal grooves (found the name) so the sensor goes  through.

I have a new one in reserve so its not a big problem, (price about 20 pound) but not a smart VW/Skoda solution.

exiting to get it out the right way:?!
