Front wipers fail

Featured Replies

Hi, the front wipers have failed on my Octavia (2013).  AA guy thought it was the wiper motor, so took it to main dealer.  They have replaced the motor and the wipers are still not working.  Anyone have any ideas as to what may be happening?  #guessthisisgoingtocostalot

Should be under warranty just, or ask the dealer to ask Skoda to contribute. Wipers should not fail after just 3 years.

Motor, foreign material in motor/transmission area, fuses, controller.

Have you by any chance got an aftermarket HID headlight conversion kit on the car? This can happen with certain VAG cars - I've seen it on an (older) Audi A3. Just another thing to check in the process of elimination.

thanks Glosrich - unfortunately just out of warranty!  :(
Skodaphile - nothing aftermarket on the car.
wlange - motor has been replaced, as has fuse.  still dead.

thanks all for the ideas.

Did they check correct supply voltage at motor before replacement?

Was fuse observed to be blown before replacement?

Get the wiring checked for continuity.

Check voltages as suggested.

Moreover from repair manual (Electrical system - Edition 07.2013):

3.1 Fault recognition and fault display, coding
♦ The wiper motor control unit - J400- and the windscreen wiper
motor - V- are installed as one component and cannot be replaced
separately.
The vehicle voltage control unit - J519- , which regulates the
functions of the windscreen wiper and washer system, is equipped
with self-diagnosis which facilitates the fault finding.
Use the ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester for troubleshooting and coding.

One more silly thing to check:

If the wiper motor is switched on during work, the front flap must
be closed and the ignition must be switched on, otherwise the
voltage supply of the wiper motor is interrupted.

Is there nothing mechanically blocking it? Do you rear motors / buzzing / vibration / is there a minimal movement?

Did you check rain sensor if you have one?

There are more sensor related to it - see attached pics.

One last thing, or maybe first - GROUND! See if all is properly grounded first.

You would have thought the dealer techs would have done the basics first such as checking voltage, the presence of 0v etc

Yeah, you would...but then again shocking amount of "troublesome" cases boil down to basics.

I did service some industrial machinery, rather high complexity, sensitive stuff and amazingly often customer problems were related to shortage or wrong utility supplies or simple electronic corrections being applied by "I don't know who did that".

any one close to you with VCDS to look if that is indicating any faults?

thanks for all the tips.  Just waiting to see what the garage says - but at least I can ask if they have thought about the above points.

I have not much confidence in the 'master techs'

Hope they aint going to charge you for these unsuccessful 'repairs'..... Surely they can not charge for not fixing the problem? After all, they are supposed to be the 'experts', trial & error surely is not chargable??
