Is this normal ? Aircon oddness

Featured Replies

When I have the air con on its lowest temperature setting, then I press the auto button to maintain that temperature, the temperature goes up to 22 degrees, not ideal, so is this normal, never seen this happen in any other car I have been in or worked on,

Is it a setting that can be changed with VCDS .

I think they all do it. Even the workshop air con at work does the same, it can be on 18 on a cool only setting but when you press the mode button to put it into auto(cool+heat) the temp goes to 22. Weird.

Sounds normal, mine does it, my Seat Exeo did the same, and I am pretty sure my current Ibiza does it as well.....

I think if you read the manual, it does say that a "normal" comfortable all year temp is 22 ... Well not sure about the Skoda manual but my Exeo did... :)

If you have it on Auto then lower the temp it will keep it at that temp..

The climate control regulates between the set temperatures of 18-26 degrees. If you rapidly want to cool the car then select the blue section below 18 degrees and the car provides unregulated cold air to cool the car. Similarly if you select the read section above 26 decrees you get unregulated heat. If when selected to 18 your car isn't cool then there is something wrong. In all the climate controlled cars I've had, I have left the temp set at 20/21 degrees all year round.

I'm pretty sure if you just turn the dial back from "blue" to "18" it will just revert back to auto at 18 degrees..... Just pressing the auto button instead reverts the system back to it's default of 22 degrees.

That's what it does... No idea why they think that 22 degrees is the "normal" temp... I always have mine on AUTO at whatever temp I like...

As I say my Exeo did the same, I think it said in the handbook 22 degrees was a good all year temp..

My Polo GTi was also the same.... Only single zone climate control rather than duel but was still the same thing of if you put it on blue and then pressed auto it would default to 22 degrees but if you just turned it back to 18 degrees it would go back to auto but at 18 degrees etc....

It's just a quirk of the VAG climatronic system.

Mine stays either on 18 or 19 all year round, 22 is uncomfortably hot for me - if there was a Superb available in Ireland with cooled seats when I was looking I'd have gone for that though, the heated seats are pretty much wasted on me.

There are two Auto modes on the climate control - if you press Auto a second time a different LED lights up on the Auto button, which puts the system in a more aggressive cooling mode, presumably at the expense of economy. I only use it on very hot days, so it hasn't been used since 2014.

The Auto mode cycles through all the vents to keep all the air in the car well mixed. If you pick footwell vents/face vents/windscreen it only supplies to these vents, which can lead to very uneven temperatures in the car. Select Auto first and then choose your temperature and you shouldn't need to do a whole lot more.

Incidentally there's also a second light on the recirculate button, which is supposed to automatically switch to recirculation if the outside air is too polluted, but I've no idea whether this works. The car always turns on recirculation when you select reverse since it's likely to be travelling through it's own exhaust fumes while backing up.

Yes it does automatically switch between external and internal air. Usually when it needs to cool the car down quickly. I leave it on this mode all the time.

With regard the two auto modes yes the left hand auto LED is slow fan mode where the fans never go above around 50% and the right hand LED means it will use the fans up to 100% if required. This works when both trying to cool the car or heat the car up. I can't see this being an issue on economy as it is only the maximum fan speed that is changed I believe.

Knew I had read it in the manual... "We recommend 22 degrees"

I've found the ideal temperature for me is 20.5 lol

22ºC is a universally accepted norm for human comfort levels. More often than not, 22 has always been fine for me with the air conditioning switched on. When I have the A/C switched off, I prefer 19-20ºC. I only run the A/C on warmer days where the temperature of the outside air cannot provide any free cooling.

It's partly due to the relative humidity dropping off due to the A/C pulling the latent heat out of the air, therefore making the air feel cooler than it really is.

Auto recirc due to pollutants in the air will only work when the system is set to Auto. Auto recirc due to activation of washer jets and/or reversing applies at all times.

If the system is under a high cooling load, it will gradually set the system to full recirc to minimise the heat load from warm and humid external air. Once the cooling load is under control it will slowly revert to full fresh air.

The low power auto mode is for the driver and one passenger, the higher setting is for a full compliment of passengers.

Thanks for the answers, it just always baffled me why it reverts to 22 degrees, never seen it in any other non-VAG car
