1.4 PD 80 TDI OIL

Recommended Posts

Hi folks

Want to do my own oil change pretty soon just waiting on my oil extractor arriving and Bosch oil filter but I am stuck on what oil to use on my engine it seems all these 505.01,505.00 numbers are very confusing after a while. Can anyone recommend me a high quality oil for my 1.4 80 PD ?? My car is a 2007 btw (57)

Cheers

You can use any oil (make) you want as long as is compatible which your vehicle's manufacturer directions.

The fact that he said in his post "it seems all these 505.01,505.00 numbers are very confusing after a while." would imply he's kinda lost on what specification he needs.

That fine by me,and I can accept that many people are not in to cars, oil specifications, service intervals e.t.c. , but if he used a 5-30 that was not compatible with his car's engine and did not conform with 505.01 for example and he was opening a topic like: ''I used 5w-30 x brand and my tappets are making noise now, what should I do?'' then what our answer should be?

He asked for a recommendation for an oil to use, and I gave him a recommendation. He didn't ask anything else about what went wrong because he used an oil he shouldn't have used. That's not a relevant point, really.

Yes as Rustynuts said I haven't put an incorrect oil in, I'm just wondering what oil to use when I change it... But I'm going with the Mobil 1 ESP

Thanks for the help

Ebay check for "Quantum Platinum" or visit TPS, that is the oil Skoda/VW/Audi/Seat sell and use. Just make sure that anything you buy is "PD" compatable, which Quantum is. The other option is Quantum Longlife3, but that is for the 1.4 fitted with a DPF (Greenline) and is a little lighter in viscosity index. If you are unsure, visit a Skoda/VW/Audi/Seat dealer where it may cost a little more but should give confidence.

The PD engines have to use 505.01 oil as that specification includes extra wear additives for the increased shear forces on the cam-driven fuel pump follower.

Ignore at your peril.

According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 is of the following quality level:
API CF
Volkswagen (Gasoline) 502 00 / 503 00 / 503 01
Volkswagen (Diesel) 505 00 / 505 01 / 506 00 / 506 01
All VW engines with the exception of Unit-Injector / Pump-Duse TDI without LongLife Service and without DPF between 1999-2003 and R5/V10-TDi before model year 2006

Not sure exactly how to read that - but won't be going in mine.

From the same page as you linked to:

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 has the following builder approvals:

BMW Longlife 04

MB-Approval 229.31

MB-Approval 229.51

Volkswagen (Gasoline / Diesel) 504 00 / 507 00

Porsche C30

Chrysler MS-11106

Peugeot/Citroën Automobiles B71 2290/ B71 2297

VW504/507 supercedes all previous specifications including VW505.01, and is only unsuitable for PD engines without longlife and dpf between 1999 and 2003 (which were not specified to VW505.01 and as such were subject to premature cam wear etc.), and the V10 tdi prior to 2006. All you've done is take a few words from the middle of the sentence and ignored the rest of the sentence. Read it all in context and you'll see that it's fine.

Take a read of the VW Specification list of what oils are authorised by VAG to carry their specification and suitable to be used (not "recommended" , or "can be used where XXX specification is required", or any other such ambiguous statement), and you'll see that Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 is VAG approved to VW504/507.

Changed my mind at the last minute and thought I'd play it safe and go with quantum platinum 5w-40

Only £16 for 5 litres from eBay ... bargain!!

As stated above by Rusty Nuts, 505.01 (typically a 5w/40) is superseded by 507 (which is usually found in 5w/30).

My 1.4pd Tdi has run on this for all of its 60k miles and runs perfect.

Alexvrs, what oil extractor have you gone for? I am after one myself and want to ensure that the extractor tube will fit down the oil dipstick tube ok.

Thanks,

you mean 505.01 or 507 or indeed anything that supersedes it. They don't make it easy to understand

EDIT: doh, already been mentioned above

IMHO much wiser choice.

Well, if you want an average quality semi synthetic oil rather than a good quality full synth, then fair enough.

Still, all sorted.

@storm blue 2

I went for the sealey 6.5 litre oil extractor, I will confirm if the tube fits when it arrives

@rustynuts

I'm sure quantum must be decent quality as it is what the main dealers use and is designed for the PD engine

Don't worry about it, the Quantum 5-40 in a silver bottle that is 505.01 is FULLY synthetic and will be totally fine for a PD engine. It is indeed what they use at the dealers. I have 4 bottles of it in the garage.

Don't listen to rusty nuts he must have got mixed up with another oil  :D

Isn't Quantum made by Castrol? That seems to be the general consensus.

Anyway, VW dealers use Shell oils in the workshop, and the factory fill used to be Fuchs oil but is now also Shell. The quantum brand is simply the retail oil they sell to customers.

I run on Petronas which I get from euro carparts. Just ordered a new bottle and a bosch filter, with a discount code flash25 which made it under £23 for the both. Be sure to get the correct oil tho, I got syntium 5000 for VW engines.
