Brakes - wear rates

Featured Replies

Bought the car with 20k on the clock. So presumably original brake pads.

Today at 80k the MOT advisory says REAR brakes almost worn to limit.

Asked about front pads - they are fine 5mm.

I have never had any work done on the brakes, anyone any ideas how this could happen? (I do not go everywhere in reverse)

At 80k the rear pads have done well. Are you saying that the front pads have lasted 80k with 5mm left? Extraordinarily good wear rates.

I guess the rear callipers could be sticking slightly, any extra heat from the rear discs?

Well, if it was on original pads then yes, but I've only had the car 60k. I'm pretty light on the brake pedal. Also a lot of non stop French motorway journeys a couple of years ago. eg 1200 miles with only occasional driver change stops.

No heat noticeable, will ask when pads are changed if calipers were free, but I wouldn't expect 2 sides to stick the same amount. Hand brake a possibility I suppose.

Bear in mind that the rear pads have less meat on them from new. As 80 per cent of braking is carried by the front pads the rear brakes are not subject to so much wear. There is a warning dong if the handbrake is left on. I am also light on the brake pedal but the disc rotors are showing a wear ridge at 12k. they must be made of bacofoil
