110 TDI power loss

Featured Replies

My Y reg 110tdi has developed a power loss problem.First it seemed to be intermittent but now it seems to be all the time. After the initial problem it started hunting. The inner wing liner was missing and the air filter was soaking with water splashed up by the wheel. The inside of the air intake pipe and the maff valve had a little water in it.A new liner was fitted along with a new air filter and a new maff valve. This cured the hunting problem but the lack of power problem remains. When just started a couple of minutes if I try to accelerate fairly quickly it sometimes cuts out and when I try to restart the engine it turns over like it has no compression and then fires a couple of times and then starts. There was a broken wire to the flap in the manifold which was repaired before the liner and air filter was fitted. Is it possible that something could have been affected by dampness being sucked in through the air intake? The car cut out when cold as above once before the power loss started. Can anyone please help me with this problem?

Has the car had any diagnostics done to tell you if there are any fault codes showing?

I had it put it on a computer in an auto electritians. He said there was one relating to the flap in the inlet manifold that had the broken wire to it that he could not clear(we repaired the wire and didn't put it back on to clear the code).I think he also said there was one to do with over boost by the turbo and one to do with the maff valve.I will not see him until the end of next week at the earliest to double check and maybe get it checked again.

that broken wire controlls the E.G.R valve via a solinoid, when you shut the engine down the flap should move fast, if the wire(s) has chaffed through ( in those clips that hold them ) then chances are the vacum hoses have worn a small hole too, check all the vacum pipes. Trust me, if the E.G.R is working correctly, you will get lack of power. If the flap still isnt moving freely, when you turn the engine off remove the flexi air pipe and check the valve inside, may be blocked up with black soot. Let me know hoe you get on

Thanks m8.I will try the vacumn pipes at some point over the next couple of days.I am sure I moved the flap and it moved freely.I will let you know how I get on.Hopefully it is something simple like a worn pipe.

I have found 1 pipe so far with a small hole in it.I replaced the pipeand tried the car.The car cut out when I tried to accelerate quickly when quite cold and when I tried to start it it kicked a few times and then started. When it moved off it seemed ok.It still was short of power. After about 5 mins I stopped the car and restarted it and the power was back to normal. It lost power again and I stopped and restarted and the power was back to normal again.I t only seems to loose power when I put my foot right to the floor.I will look for more small holes in vacumn pipes.Any ideas of anything else I should be checking?Any help greatfully appreciated.

Hi, sorry to hear you are having trouble with your octy - have a look at these links, i was having trouble the week before xmas and some of the symptoms you are having are similar i think, mine seems to have fixed its self before i got to the bottom of it, i suspect sticking turbo vanes that have now freed up. have a look anyway just incase there is anything that may help.

I have found the printout from the computer check. It is (1) 17965 P1557 Turbocharger overboost condition:control limit exceeded . (2) 19561 P3105 Change-over valve for intake manifold flap - N 239 :open or short to ground (this was where the broken wire was fixed) and (3) 17552 P1144 Mass air flow(MAF) Sensor-G70:open short to ground. (new maf sensor has been fitted) The only code that could not be cleared was the one for the manifold flap.It wasn't put back on the computer after the wire was fixed. The vacum pipe I replaced was from a Y piece to a black valve near the manifold flap.It was about 7-8 inches long.I think there was 2 pipe connectors on the valve and a wiring plug. Is this the N 75 valve and could this possibly be the cause of my problem?

most of those faults are just because you have unplugged things. It could be the turbo- when the wastegate seizes up it gives those exact simtons, power returns when you turn off and restart again. Get dealer to double check, there is special test procedures for this. There are two types of turbo your car could have, both are expensive.

Thanks m8 I will check the waste gate.I put a tin of Power Boost through the intake system to try and clean things up a bit and there was a massive cloud of smoke to begin with when I went for a drive as per the instructions on the can and then the smoke cleared. It dropped power after about 4 mins up the revs in 5th gear.I stopped and restarted and it has been ok since.I am going to try it tomorrow when the engine is cold.I wonder if the dampness that was being sucked through when the inner wheel liner was missing and the air filter box and air filter was contaminated with water has caused something to stick a bit?Maybe if I am lucky the power Boost will free them off a bit.I will post how I get on tomorrow. Thanks for everyones help and advice.

First thing this morning the car lost its power in 5th gear at about 3,600 revs when I was chasing it up through the gears.I dipped the clutch, switched the engine off and restarted the engine. It has performed ok all day.I have noticed that when the car is started when cold ther is a small leakage of gasses at the turbo. This dissapears as soon as the engine is warm.Iwill check this out tomorrow.Could this possibly be part of my problem?I will post my findings tomorrow.

Have you considered the MAF in more detail? Most of the symptons would be in accordance with an MAF fault. It does seem to be somewhat endemic to the Mk 1 Octavia....

I have already fitted a new MAF senor

Same again this morning.Today I changed the vaccum pipe going down to the turbo and lubricated the linkages at the turbo.Still got a slight flat spot at approx1300 revs but apart from that it is going ok.Will see what tomorrow morning brings.

Cool , making progress then :)

You wont be able to free off the wastegate, if its seizing you can only tell using vag machines and a new turbo is the only answer.

Cheers m8.I think I will go to the dealer and enquire about getting it checked out.I can live with stopping the engine and starting it now and again but my wife is not to keen on the idea.(it is her car after all). Thanks for all your advice.

I spoke to a mechanic on Saturday morning and he said the turbo will be on its way out as said on earlier posts. He told me the symptoms as soon as I mentioned the power loss.He said if I was really lucky it could be a vaccum hose but it was most likely to be the turbo.I would like to thank everyone that posted to help me it was very much appreciated. The hunt is now on for a recon or exchange turbo.

I wont say i told you so!!! thats ok mate. You need to know wheather your turbo is a garrett or kkk, the easiest way to tell- if theres a green sticker near the wastegate, its a garrett.

Problem solved.Exchange turbo fitted and thakfully car is back to normal. Thanks for all your help everyone.

out of interest, how many miles did your car have on it when this appears and what sort of driving do you usually do?

The car had been private hire before we got it and would have done a lot of stop, start and short journeys.

My Octy was an ex-lease car, and I had to replace the turbo at about 75k :-(

75k isn't good.

Mine is on 72k now and showing no signs of causing me problems (until tomorrow when it will now no doubt explode)

I went to see a Peugeot 406 Turbo last year, the seller said it needed a new vacuum hose as the current one had
