100mpg from mkII Octy

Featured Replies

My 2008 1.9TDI mkII Octy was declared an insurance loss yesterday after being scraped from back to front by a white van on the M6.  Took off my drivers mirror, folded the front wheel arch etc.  Still perfectly driveable though, but due to age and 130k on clock they won't repair it (5 maybe 6 panels would need replacing).

Anyway, been driving like Miss Daisy for the last few weeks just as an experiment.  I travel 70 miles Southport to Stoke and then back again every day in it.  I regularly get 650 miles out of a tank, 750 if I am careful.  With the majority of the M6 being 50mph at the moment due to roadworks, I am seeing this go beyond 800 miles so I decided to try a week of slow driving just to see what I can squeeze out of the car.

This was the first week I have been forcing myself to do this every day, each way.  Got over 90mpg on three journeys, with high 80's on the others.  Today, the last ever journey home as I get a hire car tomorrow and hopefully a replacement at the weekend, I got 103mpg.  Never took it above 50mph.  The fuel light came on at 808 miles and there was 885 on the trip when I got home with 30 left in the tank according to the car.

I know the trip computer overestimates, but I calculate that at around 76mpg actual for the 12 gallon tank.  Not too shabby!

Enough of Miss Daisy though, back to normal driving next week ;)

Bit of a shame a serviceable car is going to the scrappy for cosmetic damage.

They are surprisingly frugal. Even mine having a DSG I have seen 60mpg out of it (calculated) doing long trips down to Dover doing 70mph where possible and sticking to other speed limits.

And yes seems a shame to scrap it!

The old 1.9TD was an exceptionally frugal engine when driven for economy.

Although the new common rail engines are smoother and more powerful for the capacity they are not as easy to get good economy in my experience.

That's emission control systems for you.

^ A bleak irony.

I posted recently i got 97mpg out of my ALH mk1. Wouldve cracked to 100 if it wasnt for the bloody road works stop/go. Body work write offs like that are a pita. Swmbo's car had it done following an accident.

I know it was put back on the road thpugh

Buy it back and fix it?

I once got 99.6mpg on a 35 mile drive but it was mainly downhill from the Schwarzwald following a lorry. Soon dropped once we joined the Autobahn!

Yes its a shame the old 1.9tdi 90bhp was a very frugal user of diesel,i regularly got 90mpg out of mine,i do miss her
