DSG 7 is whining - not even 2k on the clock yet.

Recommended Posts

Yep. My 1.4TSI DSG Superb is at the dealership getting an urgent check carried out. And I'm waiting for the replacement Passat which should be with me in an hour. Quick back story:

Driving out of the City I noticed an odd 'whining' sound at low speeds. Music off and it stopped but I kept the music off for a while to keep listening out.

Turns out, when setting off (and especially on inclines), the gears grind and 'whine' as you put your foot down, and then with each shift up there is another whining noise which gets fainter until it dissappears at higher gears with lower revs.

Called my dealership's service team asap who stated they are very back logged but whilst on the Bluetooth phone call even he could hear the noise! And promptly told me to stop driving and call Skoda Assist for a more urgent response.

Skoda Assist promptly came as I sided up and refused to drive any further thinking "WTF is my 4 month old car making this noise for!?"

The chap from AA (partnered with Skoda Assist) quickly deciphered it's a gear issue, and obviously with higher revs one of the two clothes is not doing what it's told. So he kindly escorted me to my dealership (the slowest I've ever driven keeping revs calm but luckily traffic made driving slow inevitable and not infuriating) who said they will look into this asap and find out what's going on!

Will keep ya'll posted. I had heard some concerns on the 7 speed dry DSG before ordering but let's hope it's just a duff part that needs replacing.

Oh and I only just had my roof wrapped in black gloss! Wanted to at least show it off a little! :(

I had an Octavia with the dry 7 speed box and it was plagued with faults. I lost confidence in the car after 14 months and 4 separate gear related problems. I've put my faith in the 6 speed wet box this time. So far so good. Hope you get sorted!

waiting to see whats up with yours

mine has a whine (like clutch slip but its not as the revs don't rise) when I pull away on an incline (only 2550 miles covered). spoke to the dealer, they know of no current issues but will take the car in for a check.

That sounds exactly like the problem mate. And for me with every upshift on an incline you can hear the whine (which gets shorter and quieter the lower the rev range and higher the gear shift). Will keep you updated with what they say but probably won't be till tomorrow/Wednesday considering the Bank Holiday.

Apparently it was an issue with the right side CV gasket... The boot wasn't greased up properly so they've shoved a whole lot to grease in there and resealed and "apparently" it's not making any more noises. Will pick up tomorrow and find out.

Dilz, I hope that has sorted it out for you!

Fingers crossed.

The question is, how did it come out of the factory like that!!

All is good finally! Not a single whiney noise and I had forgotten how refined, quiet and smooth the 1.4TSI is (the Passat I've been in had the 2.0 Diesel 150PS which was so much more gruff).

If anybody else notices this noise, just mention it to the dealer and suggest it my be a CV joint boot issue. Apparently it just wasn't greased enough at factory which is slightly alarming!

I personally would have wanted a new CV joint fitting. You've been driving round with a poorly greased joint that caused it to make a noise. Surely that has caused some damage to it and it could be prone to an early failure.

Very true - however, if it does now let go within the warranty period, he can relate back to this incident (which will now be logged with the dealer and possibly Skoda) and possibly get a new CV under warranty - or at least argue for a good will payment.

Aaaaannnnnd the noise is back. So the Superb is back with the dealership and I'm in an Insignia for now (despite being a 16 plate, it really is so much more gruff and rickety then my Superb!)

Will keep you posted. Clearly the CV joint gasket greasing wasn't enough.

Yep, for me it's definitely on full lock but it's also there under high revs (on setting off), especially on inclines. I hope it doesn't appear all the time for you!

  • 2 weeks later...

well mine went in today

no its not the cv boot but it is clutch slip!

the noise is exactly the same as the clip given to the dealers on the technical bullitin.

cure is two new clutch plates and a software update to the transmission.

I'm going in first thing tomorrow to test the car as apparently 'it's not longer making any noises'...

I'll mention the clutch slip if I hear anything!

Same as yours jeehi

A clutch issue. Managed to record the sound with the technician this morning so they've ordered a new clutch pack to replace and then do an ECU change.

So this was not picked up by the technician until you pointed it out? As a matter of interest which dealer are you using?

The clutches in the 7 speed DSG are very similar to normal manual gearbox clutches then operated electronically. So they are unfortunately prone to wear or slip just like a manual clutch. It's not uncommon for manual cars to have a failed clutch so early on.

It was such an intermittent noise that even after 25 minutes of driving with the technician sat beside me, we didn't hear a thing. It was only as we headed back to the dealership giving up that the noise began!

I'm using Allams in Epsom and I think they are a great outfit... It's just my car seems to only make the noises whenever it likes which is why it was difficult to diagnose!

as with mine the mechanic had it on road test for 20 mins and nothing then as he turned into the garage for a final check he heard it another 20 mins later plus 2 extra mechanics it was pinpointed to the front passengers side.

only after checking for any technical updates did he find out about the clutch sound, (let me listen to the sound from skoda) and the sound matched.

explained to me it's like the computer is riding the clutch and a software update is required to correct it. As its a fault the clutch's are changed to eliminate any damage.

i can only say that i nearly didn't put the car into the dealers thinking it was my imagination and was anything actually wrong becouse it never made the noise all the time. Even pulling away on the same hill at the same point sometimes yes sometimes no.

But I wonder how many will ignore this noise?
