vRS disc brake size versus SE model?

Bargain...good old eBay?

The tires fitted actually get some good reviews after I've read up about it, and let's be honest, ant winter compound tyre is going to better than a summer one in snow / ice.

I'll continue to look around though just to see what's out there!

Yep - eBay. I actually missed them first time round, contacted the seller because the listing ended early, said he'd sold them...then the buyer never coughed up, so I ended up paying less than he was originally asking! :D

As for the tyres - if you are driving constantly in snow I agree, but otherwise I don't. Unless you are in the Arctic Circle, you will be using them in average conditions much of the time, and I know which I would rather have...

I think you are confusing winter tyres & snow tyres.

Winter tyres are designed to operate in cold conditions (around 5°C or lower) & have a tread pattern designed to move more water than summer tyres.

They will give improved performance on normal roads & I would expect they would be pretty useful in UK winter weather.

If they are free with the wheels, theres no reason not to use them & Vredstein have a good reputation.

I will soon put my winter 17" on and then I will make some pics of the (very) tight clearance.

I'll be fitting these soon on my 230, Standard Spec Alloy wheel from a Cyprus Spec Octavia Tsi Vrs

Now these are tight but I know they will fit

The fitted 225/45/17 Pirelli tyres are to be sold ( almost new ) and I'll fit some  225/45/17 All Season/Winter tyres.

Possibly these

Sorry, I appear to be causing confusion!

I was referring to the 'Sailun' winter tyres in the eBay link posted by vtec to vrs, (which IMHO are budget, lower quality winter tyres) and his\her comment that "any winter compound tyre is going to better than a summer one in snow / ice".

The fact is that during the winter months here in the UK, we are more likely to be driving in rain most of the time. I am a believer in winter tyres, my point is that cheap winter tyres may perform better than summer tyres in snow & ice, but the rest of the time will likely be inferior to summer tyres in rainy conditions. Good quality winter tyres will usually be better all round when the weather is cold & wet, in my experience.

I would personally buy decent quality winter tyres (not the most expensive, but certainly not ditch finders  :p ).

At the end of the day, the point of changing to winter tyres is for improved grip & safety - when in actual fact, unless the car is being used solely in snow & ice, cheap winter tyres may actually result in decreased safety overall.

Those were my previous summer wheels, so I am sure they fit :)
