vRS disc brake size versus SE model?

Featured Replies

I've got a 4x4 estate on a 3yr business contract hire deal comes to an end in a few months. When I got the car the only diesel offering was the 150PS in manual and the car only came in the SE spec with 16" wheels.

I do a lot of alpine driving so I've got a replacement set of factory 205/55 R16 91V IIias alloy wheels & a full size steel spare, all fitted with winter tyres. This is still the same wheel as supplied on the current SE model.

The car has been excellent so I'm going to replace it with the same again but this time I fancy the vRS spec with the 184PS diesel & DSG box. The vRS comes with 225/40 R18 92Y Gemini 18" alloys.

Does anyone know if the vRS has larger diameter discs meaning my 16" wheels won't fit?

I need to get an order placed soon to get the delivery date & I'm away at the moment with no local dealer so can't just go and measure 'em. Also tried calling a couple of dealers but they were unhelpful. I've also tried blowing up some images and the discs look the same but not clear enough to get an accurate measure.

Thanks in advance.

Yes the vRS has larger front discs and the minimum wheel size that will fit is 17".  Even then some 17" wheels won't fit due to their spoke profile.

Ah well, does it come with bigger discs. There is a thread on here suggesting the diesel vRS no longer comes with the larger 'upgraded' front discs.

There's a thread on here about the Diesel Octavia MKIII Vrs now having smaller front discs. 16" wheels should fit the front.

Yeah 312mm discs are now being fitted to the diesel vRS, instead of 340mm (still fitted to the petrol).

Thanks for the replies.

So that's a no, a maybe & a yes :D

Don't need the ground clearance of the Scout & can't get the 184 DSG engine in the SE & then up-spec it so I think I'll push the button the vRS on the proviso that it has the girlie front discs.

I'll add another yes  the Diesel VRS now comes with 312mm front brakes. If it is a standard offset etc then the 16" should fit

If by some freak of nature yours doesn't there is a long list of people in the other thread that will swap  :D

I've taken delivery of the 4x4 tdi vrs in the last month and can confirm it has the smaller discs:(

+1 for the smaller discs on current diesel model so your SE wheels will be fine for winter driving.

Update: Took delivery of my 4x4 vRS TDI DSG estate this week and it does have 340mm discs on the front so 16" wheels won't fit.

If that is the case then a freak of nature has happened, I would hate to be on the other end of the Skoda customer service phone Monday morning  :peek:

Just had another look at my car but it's dark so I can't see much. From what I remember my old Mk3 Oct Est 4x4 TDI had the same size discs all round. My new vRS 4x4 TDI DSG definitely has bigger discs at the front than the rear - so I'm assuming they're the 340's & there's 312's on the rear? Or am I being a knob & the rears are smaller than 312 so my bigger front discs could actually be 312's afterall?

The cars got 18" Gemini wheels & I can't see how there's enough room to drop down to 16" without fowling the discs.

They are probably 312 up front, and 27x at the rear.

Your old car probably had 288 front, and 27x at the rear. I think that is the standard size for models with 150BHP or less.

I have the 312mm discs, and they do fill out my 16" rims I have for winters. But they do fit.

You definitely have 272 rear as that is what they all have. My money would still say you have 312s front.

They will be tight on 16" obviously as that is the smallest wheel that will go on. Book says 6.5Jx16 et46 / 6Jx16 et48 or et50 will fit on 312s although not technically listed for the VRS

I thought you had measured them or tried the wheel. You can tell from looking at the ends of the calipers, the 340 is rounder.

Looks like mine have the 312's up front after all  . I've even read up on how to use a tape measure & verified it myself this morning! Here's mine:

18inch_Gemini_wheels_with_312mm_front_di

Only 35mm from the leading edge of the caliper housing to the inside of the rim so still can't see how a two inch small wheel would squeeze in there.

However, it's academic anyway as a customer of mine bought my old car direct from VW Finance and he wanted the wheels as well. I was undecided whether to sell them or not & I thought I'd be happy putting the 16" on the vRS but once I got the car I could see that they weren't going to look anything like as good as a bigger wheel I decided to let him have them, especially as I got a very good price for them.

I'm now off to that alloy wheels thread to see what'll fit :D

That is because your 35mm is radius and your 2" is diameter

You would be decreasing the radius by 1" (25.4) giving you a clearance of 9.6mm

Like all said above they would fit (spoke design dependant) but they would be tight

Doh! Bloody obvious of course. My old wheels had some hefty balance weights on them so yes, it would've been pretty snug - & closer than I'd be comfortable width.

This is how it looks with the 312mm brakes and 16" rims.

Check out the "Aftermarket Wheel" thread to give you some good ideas to start with.

I went with a set of Dezent TD Graphite wheels for mine & think they look pretty good for a winter set.

Plus the graphite colour doesn't show the winter dirt as easily meaning you are less dissapointed an hour after you've been to the carwash..!

I will soon put my winter 17" on and then I will make some pics of the (very) tight clearance.

The link above, post #67 should save you the effort...

My wife picked up these wheels from the tyre fitters last weekend after I had ordered replacement tyres, only for me to discover that they had placed balance weights on top of balance weights, despite specifically asking if the used low profile weights before they fitted them!

Thinking about buying these for my L&K.

Seems reasonable? Anyone got any other recommendations?

I personally believe you could do better for that money - i.e. some used alloys and better branded tyres.

I managed to grab some 18 x 7.5" VW 5 spoke alloys (easy to clean in winter  :D ) which had just been fully professionally refurbished in gunmetal, WITH almost new 225/40/18 Vredestein Wintrac winter tyres for £400!  They were literally hardly used, the load rating was incorrect for the VW van they were bought for, and the guy only realised two weeks after fitting them...! Offset is 38 as opposed to 51 so they should fill the arches nicely (I run 15mm/20mm spacers F/R on my Extremes)

Pictures to follow.

Oh...and he threw in a set of bolts...and locking bolts.

edit - Just seen you already have the car, so the order book being closed makes no difference :D

Bargain...good old eBay?

The tires fitted actually get some good reviews after I've read up about it, and let's be honest, ant winter compound tyre is going to better than a summer one in snow / ice.

I'll continue to look around though just to see what's out there!
