Reverse Lights and Old Lights

Featured Replies

Hello,

I drive a 1.9 SDI 05 reg, today someone noticed that my reverse lights are not working, now upon visually inspecting the bulbs they seem fine but I heard about the light reverse switch, where is this located and also which fuse relates to the reverse lights.

Secondly after taking up the gearstick gaiter and front ashtray I noticed there's a small bulb connected in this space, any idea why and what its for?

Light up the ashtray when open perhaps?

It was tucked under the console I didn't even know it was there until I lifted this up so wouldn't think itll be for that, but not sure.

It sounds like the ashtray light to me it's the only light that would be in the centre console.

I'd imagine that the reverse switch would be located on the actual gearbox.

Fuse 13, dash fuseholder, I think. Should be a 10 amp fuse.

Ashtray light won't have been put back in its correct spot after someone's had the centre console out for some reason.

Assuming it's a manual box car, I think the switch is on the top of the box somewhere, on a diesel.

For switch location see this ebay listing (first pic):  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKODA-FABIA-00-07-1-9-DIESEL-SDI-GEARBOX-EYY-CODE-5-SPEED-0000282260-/361400070629?hash=item54251f71e5:g:iGMAAOSw37tWDSBD

Connector low down on front of box, same as on petrol boxes apparently.

Wires going to it are black/red from the fuse and black/blue back to BCM/onboard supply control unit. I think.

Gents, thanks for the responses will check out now and report back! Also slightly OTT but related, the two clips that are used to tension the cables coming from the gearbox to shifter, see link  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Bowden-Gear-Level-Selector-Cable-Catch-FOR-VW-AUDI-SEAT-SKODA-GOLF-IBIZA-/161506771791?hash=item259a8dc34f:g:FiQAAOSwkNZUfrMY

One of the four legs has broken and as such I have to double shift into fourth gear every time, how easy is this to replace?

Whaaat? There is an ashtray light?

It's crap anyway. You could put a candle in the boot and get a better light :D

I'd love to have an ashtray light. Do you have a picture or something? The ashtray itself is removable.

The bulbs are easily changeable for brighter ones on the ashtray :)

Has anyone got any photos of how it should look!? And any ideas on the gear link selector? And am I right in thinking to get to this reverse switch I need to take the pan off from under the car and check for it there?

It's just a switch screwed into the gearbox. What's your gearbox code?

You can find the code on the data sticker in the front of your service book and on a duplicate sticker under the boot carpet.

Here's an example of mine. My gearbox code is FNK...

Gear box code is GSA. I'm hoping the reverse switch is located on top of the box visible through the engine bay instead of jacking the car up

So had a look and couldn't see from top, took the bottom pan off and there is was in plain view the wiring not has broken to it. Tried to chase the wiring back but it seems to go under the battery tray does that sound right? How do I then replace this loom for the switch?

Try a new switch before you worry about wiring.

With ignition on, link across the pins of the loom plug and see if the reverse lights come on, if so, it's a switch problem.

No my apologies, the wiring had broken. One of the wires was snapped off so I need to reattach the wires somehow. From what I've read a lot of people buy new switches and join the new cables to the existing cables? I'll try that I think

Also I've found the part number for the Bowden cable catch which I need to replace and have searched the forum but couldn't find anything about how to change this?!

Which Bowden cable?

Ahh ok, just never heard of it as a Bowden cable before. That's normally a thin cable for handles and flaps etc.

You release it by pulling back the collar and rotating to lock it open. Then you remove the spring clip on the peg and slide it off. The gear linkage will need to be set up, there are vids on you tube to do this.

You don't get new cables with a new switch. You will have to splice in a new piece of wire or get a connector plug with some wire on and join it to your existing wires.

Ah I see TMD! Is it easy to splice a cable into the hole? Was thinking of going to scrapyard and take the connector off and then cutting excess cables and jointing them but if the cables go easier into the connector plug the I can just get some wire and go that route. And tech1e I have previously set the linkage up but locking the selector in place then the gearstick in the car and releasing those catches so familiar with the procedure but just wasn't sure how the cable connected into the plastic cable catch as one of the four 'legs' has broken and it isn't syncing up I have to double shift into fourth everytime but if you say the cable will just pull out then may be an easier fix!
