Petrol (**** Off Mr Brown...)

Featured Replies

I got a query for you guys...I'm considering getting my Octy Jabba'd, but i see a lot of you use 98RON, instead of the bog standard stuff - is there a huge difference in performance?, and can you run a Jabba'd Octy on the normal juice, or do they set it to run with a particular type of petrol?

:drive1:

Jabba will ask you at the time of the re-map what fuel is in the car, and work from that.

Using 95, 97 or 98 post re-map is fine, but there will be slight differences in power output ;)

As for "considering" a re-map

DO IT ! :D

Fancy a demo ?? ;)

Ian, Tavia4x4, can give you the exact figures but it goes something like this:

He was at jabba getting a remap and his car on the rollers was producing IIRC 210 or thereabouts but Mike wasn't happy.

Cue Ian's visit to the Optimax emporium and he went on the rollers again and got 222bhp! No change in anything other than the fuel!

With regard to the APR 98RON program, they are quite explicit about not putting anything else in when running it....and I don't! :)

Can always switch to 95RON proggy if I can't get me Optimax, which I try to not let happen as there is a noticeable difference between the two.

I do! Can I borrow your car for a week or so? :D

Just to add..

Pre Jabba i ran the car on whatever was convenient...

Now it runs almost exclusively on Optimax, or i would use Super Unleaded if desperate :)

Insure it, pay for the fuel and slip me a grand or 2 and you have a deal :D

Put 4 star fuel in for the remap, but run the car on 3 star after that if you so wish. The car will then have been optimised for the better fuel.

4 star, 3 star?

Did this site just go through a timewarp ? :D

I wasn't going to mention it, but been a while since I've seen 3 star on a pump.... (i.e. quite a while before i passed my test)

I can assure you that the pump I filled up from just before I had my car remapped had 4 stars on it and a BS number (Esso 97RON), unlike the 4 star LRP (Total) pumps with no BS number at my local petrol station. Is there something I need to know?

The pump didn't have 3 star though, did it?

Hmmm...

The only place i've seen the 4 star symbol recently is on an LRP pump...

I've never seen a 4 star symbol on an UL pump. I thought they were mutually exclusive?

Maybe it's time for a new sports cat Denis? ;)

Yes in a diminishing few places.

It is worrying (or is it) to think that the petrol we now drive our cars on is only one step up from the lowest octane rating that used to be available. IIRC:

2** == 91 RON

3** == 95 RON <==== premium unleaded

4** == 98 RON (what we all used to use in our Cortinas etc)

5** == 101 RON (Ferraris etc)

Geoff, thanks for the encouragement and the offer of a demo - i shall definitely take you up on that (even though it means 'dirtying' myself by travelling to Hartlepool :-). I'm just waiting to pluck up the courage to contact the insurance company to see how much more money they want out of me.

Cheeky bloody smoggies !! :D

As for insurance, try LiverpoolVictoria, most of us have done quite well by switching to them.

No, it isn't worrying. It's just a reminder about how much engine technology has advanced in the last decade or so. Except in the USA, of course. Over there, it's still true that "there ain't no substitute for cubes".

I really believe that Europe and Japan are now in the forefront of engine technology; they could knock spots off anything designed in Detroit.

Totally true about the US. They may be the biggest car buying nation but they know nothing about cars! Detroit has lost the plot. A GM 3.0 V6. Sounds impressive until you realise it pushes out only 193bhp! Power sapping auto boxes too. Detriot used to be at the forefront and lost out badly, because of the SUV craze and Diesel, because they didn't develop it because they didn't think the American market wanted it. Now they are increasing in popularity in the USA due to fuel prices (in there eyes) hitting the stratosphere and they lag behind. American makers had a lack of foresight in the nineties and they are paying for it now. They developed SUV after SUV and now the market wants smaller sedans that they negleted to develop and the Japanese are there with the right product at the right time! Ford is in trouble. GM is in trouble and DaimlerChrysler is in trouble. Japanese and European makes have never been stronger in the USA and all this at a time when the US is supposidly raw and nationalistic. Detriot used to make good engines, like the ones they put in the 60's Mustangs and Chargers. Now VW has a V10 Diesel, a super efficient Petrol engine system (FSI). The Japanese have a similar system which Chrysler is feeding off of due to Mitsubishi links not to mention hybrid systems which are all the rage in the States. Pity the Americans don't have anything meaningful to add to the car world anymore. They might do it if hydrogen catches on mind.....
