emission software etc mods

Featured Replies

just had notification re the dieselgate probs from skoda france, says, just a software upgrade which will have no effect on noise, power output, speed, emissions, economy etc and it should be installed in the 3rd quarter of 2017 or when the car is in for service near to or after that suggested date.

I await developments with interest!

Are VAG on holiday  for 12 months each year or just bloody slow?

Colin

When you have muffed up as many vehicles as VAG have its going to take some time to put things "right".

I wonder how the class action is progressing.

A call last week from an unidentified person from 'Škoda UK', advising me (possibly in the light of my comments elsewhere on this Forum?) that there would be no compensation other than a software update and that our cars could not be considered in the same light as the USA as the issue there was more complex!

He had no answer to my assertion that we had all been effectively 'duped' by VAG, and perhaps wouldn't have bought our vehicles had we been aware of the massive deception by the manufacturers.

I closed the conversation by suggesting that I saw no reason to submit my 5+ year old Yeti for modification as it is performing absolutely to my satisfaction.

No further comment from HM Govt, despite McCloughlin affirming that a better deal for affected owners was needed..

I suspect the whole issue will limp on for another couple of years in the hope that everyone forgets and buys another VAG vehicle?

If, as I understand it, the software cheat was designed to sense the entirely arbitrary emissions test cycle reconfiguring the map to no longer do so ought to have no discernible effect on normal driving.

That's my thoughts as well but you wonder why it has taken them so long to come up with a fix. Would have thought it was just a case of new software without the cheat component?

And why is it that other engines i.e. the 1.6 needs hardware changes as well?

But thinking about it more - in order to be retested and pass the test without the cheat software they must have had to modify it for real world driving as well?

I'm not sure I trust their assertions that nothing will have changed. As has been said elsewhere a before and after dyno run would be interesting - peak power might be the same but what about lower down the power curve?

And the EGR valve may have to work harder causing premature failure/sooting up?

If all that was required was to make it not be emissions compliant at any time, including the test cycle, it would indeed be easy to achieve.

Instead, the idea is that the car complies all, or most, of the time, with the specified limits, and the test samples this 'normal' behaviour. By making the car detect the test, and put itself on 'good behaviour' for the duration, but never outside of those conditions, VW made a huge rod for their own back, as they effectively have a car that is designed to run in a non-compliant way, almost all the time. That's what they have to change, not the way it behaved within the test, that's the only map that is compliant. One suspects that the 'good behaviour' map isn't compatible with everyday use though, or that's what they'd have implemented from the get-go.

It's ironic though that in real world driving VWG engines are amongst the better performing with regards to emissions.

So what happened to the earlier statements that they would all be fixed in 2016?  Total rubbish, VW are taking the lowest cost option and in my view the private owners are at the back of the queue.

So if this 'fix' won't change anything, then what IS it doing?!

As I have said before, it is impossible to make changes to improve emissions and not affect how the engine makes power. If it was possible, why not do it this way to start with?

To reduce NOx you need to run the combustion cooler. To do this with only a software change means altering injection timing and/or EGR rates and/or turbo actuation. If you reduce temperatures you will affect the power delivery and the CO2 and PM emissions. VAG may think they are above the law, but even they are not above the laws of thermodynamics.

I intend to refuse the update unless someone can give me real, compelling information about what the changes are and what the effects are.

I think you'll find VAG are (and have been for many months) fully occupied in numerous U.S. courts and before the EPA as a priority for fundamental economic reasons and by the end of this month it is expected they will have finally reached a completion of the plan (acceptable to the EPA and federal prosecutors) to either buyback or modify all affected vehicles......and of course defending civil compensation class actions at the same time in various states.

Then they will address the less stringent markets......its just about financial priorities.

I imagine VAG are hoping Brexit doesn't get up because you could get all bolshy over this if you were to leave 'the club'.

so if no effect on noise, power output, speed, emissions, economy why did they go to the effort of creating the cheat software in the first place? (I expect the statement is just to try and prevent court action, when in the US they have the option of buy back of car and compensation for overstated MPG)

also like others I would be concerned about the negative effect of the work on the life expectancy of the EGR valve

Like Bill Clinton said;

"It's the EGR valve stoopid"

Maybe no owners in the UK are getting any cash money other than out of pocket expenses to attend a Dealership to get 'the fix' as far as

the VW Group are concerned, but then a court in one of the 4 UK countries might make a ruling otherwise when or if a class action is raised.

As for what the UK Government does, then that might influence things, because a law broken against a country might mean

a individual was also defrauded or just mis-sold, might have suffered financial losses.

Update, just received another missive from Skoda - the update is now scheduled between October and the end of the first quarter in 2017 - computer software glitch apparently, where have we heard that before?

The U.S. Prosecutor has given VW yet another week, so end of June for the final details of buyback/compensation and fix specifics.

USA go off the NOx content. The uk go off CO2 so VW say we will not get compensation as its the NOx content that is the problem

EU5 / EU6 both have NOx figures as well as CO2 figures

so the NOx issue is still relevant in the UK as at this point (unless decided otherwise Thursday) the UK is part of the EU

But NOx is not part of the MOT. Agreed it is an issue.

Neither is CO2.

CO2 is used in the UK to fix the level of VED (road tax)

next year only the initial purchaser of a car is penalised for it being a polluting heap of rubbish, as basically year 2 on all pay the same unless the car is worth over £40k

so much for the green creds of this government, put revenue over the environment

The initial certification process is a carefully structured (rigged?) and documented process compared to a simple annual smoke/CO2 test.

CO2 is not something that is checked annually during an MOT (anywhere in the world as far as I know).

If anyone can show me an MOT fail sheet that refers to CO2 (not CO) I'll give up drinking wine...

Don't they do one for a reregistration or dual fuel conversion?.
