A 'generic engine fault' is exactly that - generic. The light appears whenever the engine displays a fault and drops into limp mode.

As you say, the only way the find out the exact fault is a scan.

I'm running the same engine in my Fabia, and it has had the flashing glow plug warning light coming on recently, but the car hasn't gone into limp mode, it has still picked up properly, and economy hasn't been affected 

 

A fault scan came up with this:-

This is apparently a well-logged fault of the exhaust gas temperature sensor, as has been raise in the following thread:-

I had dpf issues with too much town driving at one point, and I got coil light not dpf light, which after some highway driving cleared out.

Turns out it's the turbo actuator valve sensor, so a sensor no more than few pounds I would guess. Well no as skoda don't sell the sensor, oh ok so it going to have to be the valve then, ere no as they don't sell that either it's a complete turbo. A turbo just for a failed sensor absolutely unbelievable what are vw/ skoda playing at and to top it 2 months out of warranty. Not happy
