VRs on 18's - it's time for a change of tyres

Featured Replies

Currently running on 225/40R18 92Y XL's Conti Sport Contact 2's (came with the car) I had Michelin Polit Sport 3's on my '60 plate VRs and was really please with them.

What have other VRs owners changed to and what are your findings ?

Looking for good wet grip, low noise and reasonable mpg.

I recently swapped my SC2's for a set of SC5's. Although the 2's lasted for 16K miles (far better than average for me) they lacked grip in wet and dry. I think the compound was a little too hard. The SC5's provide noticeably better traction, and are well priced.

Michelin Super Sports are supposed to be the dogs danglies, but I couldn't justify the extra £40 per corner. The SC5's are a solid improvement over mediocre SC2's.

I'm currently on Pirelli P-Zero, which are far better and more durable in my experience than the standard SC2 that mine came with.

My 2016 came with Bridgestone potenza. I have only covered 2800 miles but they seem really good in all weather and temperature so far. My car is re mapped to 234 so it will be interesting to see how long they last.

That's what my tdi vrs came with.

I shredded them in 10000 miles...oops

Ill be happy if they do 10000, ive never had a set of tires last more than that anyway.

Been looking at Bridgstones (previous good experience), Michelins (had before on Vrs) but the current CSC2's even with 5mm the grip in damp conditions is poor to say the least.

Potenza's - S001's or RE 050A's ?

Mine came with Bridgestone Potenza S001's (18 inch VRS wheels) managed to get 19,000 miles out of the fronts, rears are at 4mm so have left them. Changed the fronts for more of the same as I've found the Potenza's very good all round. I do drive carefully, but can see how someone could shred them in 10k miles, wouldn't take much, just a heavy right foot.

I replaced mine at 16,700 miles via

which fitted them at a dealership 2 miles from me and gave my wife's Tesco Clubcard about £6 in points equivalent and because I went through a cashback affiliate, I got another £6 refunded.

Yokohama's IIRC, about £90 a corner before aforesaid discounts.

I put Good Year F1 Asymmetric 3 on the front to replace SC2 that were supplied from new. Better grip and much quieter. Got a good deal at my local Formula One tyre depot. About £90 each. Going to move them to rear to wear out the other 2 SC2s.

Goodyear efficient grips.  much quieter and excellent grip.  The standard SC2s are noisy, noticeably noisier than my nokian D3 winter tyres!

Don't you just love tyre threads, they all go the same way :)

I once ordered tyres after a few glasses of wine (or maybe it was a bottle), I thought the Budget tyre on black circles was a great idea. They were OK in the dry but utterly hopeless in the wet, oh and the name... Mayrun, never again

I have Bridgestone s001s fitted to my Superb at the moment (came with the car) and they are shockingly noisy. Grip levels are ok but I still prefer the GY F1A2 that I had fitted to my previous Superb.

I have the Bridgestone Potenza S001's on my vrs. They're hard wearing and grip reasonably well in warm, dry conditions. However there are better tyres out there if a lack of wet grip and tyre noise bother you. Personally I'll be looking at PS4's or GY Asymmetric 3.

Same here..... They also appear to be wearing far more evenly. And they *cough* arent bad around the Nurburgring so I hear....  :D

I've got SC2 and have to say these are one of the worst tyres I have ever had. Noisy like nothing else in that department and really lousy on wet.

Now I found few options with positive reviews and plan to make a change next season:

- 1: Pirelli P1 Cinturato Verde
- 2: Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics
- 3: Michelin ENERGY SAVER+

Any comments / recommendations on above?

Yep.  You either get the doom-merchants saying they got 10k out of theirs or the fanboys claiming they're currently on 40k with no sign of wear.

Caveat emptor.
