New Owner - loads of questions - 1. Xenon Retro Fit?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Not even got my Scout DSG yet but already looking at what upgrade options there are. I drive a LR Discovery at present and have found loads of easy upgrades to the factory spec using genuine parts and then changing the configuration settings in the ECU modules.

First thing I want to explore is retro-fit of the genuine Xenon headlights with LED DRL, is this possible please?

Not sure I have heard of it done on the Octy3. To retrofit to OEM you would need a lot of bits including the levelling system and the wash system.

On a wider note I am not sure you will find fitting major parts as easy as on the LR. A lot of minor fettling can be done with VCDS/VCP etc but you do not have to dig very deep until you find bits covered by 'component protection', which generally takes a dealer with a link to the VAG network to lift. They actively don't like retrofits and the later the car the harder it is.

A lot of time it is easier and certainly cheaper to get the car with the right spec

There are lots of people that have retrofitted xenon in Denmark.... from what I remember it's around 15000ddk ~ 1500£

Xenon system requires plethora of sensors distributed all across the car. Could be a real pain to try to properly implement it in the OEM way.

Thanks folks, I guess I was hoping it was as simple as the Discovery 3&4 which is just a case of replacing the headlamp units and modifying a setting in the control unit via a diagnostic tool.

Will look at a high quality aftermarket kit then as had a HIDS4U setup in another car and it was great. Don't wan't the chavvy blue glare from the cheap kits but the good ones look very authentic and crisp

You could try LED headlight kits as an alternative - I have one in another vehicle (not Skoda) and they are very good. Good colour and more OEM looking IMHO.

Any recommendations for LED kits? Not thought of them for dipped/main before as presumed you would need fancy reflectors to get the right light output?

Yes - there can be issues with light 'scatter' with standard halogen type reflectors, but am I right in thinking the Octavias with halogens come with projector style headlights? In which case they should be okay.

As for recommendations, the ones I have are great but the seller was awful so I can't recommend, sorry. :x  :(

I have found HIDS4U or HIDS Direct are usually pretty good when I used them for other items. The kits are pretty simple to fit too.

Unfortunately the non-xenon equipped Octavia's here in the UK do not get projector headlights, just standard reflectors.

This makes the retrofitting of HID or LED kits quite troublesome and will almost always result in scatter and/or poor alignment which isn't very nice on those that have to look at them.

The light scatter is pretty poor, you can see it all over the garage door.

I previously fitted a HIDS4U kit on a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder, non-projector lamps and it made a perfect, crisp beam pattern via the reflector lenses, was I just lucky?

I guess I can always just go for better quality Halogen bulbs!

Not even taken delivery yet but just have a feeling I will hate the standard Halogens compared to my current HID equipped car. Couldn't get exactly what I wanted spec-wise in a new car for immediate delivery so had to settle for a nearly new with Halogens and also missed out on the Canton audio as I'm impatient and wanted a car now (not in 3-4 months!)

Standard halogens are garbage compared to xenons. Can you cancel the order and get a car with the spec you actually want? far better than chasing around trying to upgrade and will probably not cost any more. Retrofit HID kits are illegal and will invalidate your insurance

Yes, you will. One of the reasons I changed my SE for a vRS.

As carrock says - cancel and look again? See if dealer can find one?

Can't cancel now as car was Skoda UK vehicle and is in transit to the dealers now.

In that case I assume you got it at a very good price in which case stump up the £1500 ( or whatever ) to get the retrofit done properly.

It will cost a lot more than a DIY kit but it WILL be legal and will add some residual value to the car

Generally speaking, you'll probably need the following:

- Pair of xenon headlights

- Pair of xenon ballasts

- Pair of headlight controllers

- Xenon bulbs

- AFS controller (extra module)

- Two level sensors (front and rear)

- Headlight washers (if not fitted already)

- A new switch/trim without manual headlight adjustment

- Wiring between the headlights, AFS module, level sensors and power/ground/CANbus.

- Possibly a new BCM, depending if the current one is xenon compatible

It's certainly possible though :)

From HIDS4U website:- In the UK, fitting an aftermarket HID kit is not technically road legal as you are replacing a halogen bulb with an HID bulb, because of this the HID bulb cannot be E marked, which is a requirement for it to be road legal. Therefore our HID kits are sold for off-road use only

Thanks folks, will just look for better bulbs I think!

I didn't get any discount on the car at all as Scouts with DSG less than a year old (my criteria) are very scarce
