A bit harsh...

I would say they have it spot on, apart from one point. I wouldn't say they come generously equipped, when you compare what you can get from other manufacturers for the same money. That's one the main reasons we are seriously considering a ford mondeo titanium 2.0 diesel auto 4x4 over a octavia vrs diesel.

Good point, I couldn't see anything particularly out with the review either, but then it wasn't particularly clear where it was at fault

Very bad idea to buy a new diesel though right now, why would you want to do that ? You know about the 3p looming on them plus god knows what else they will pull out their sleeves against diesels in the future

Generously equipped, is not a phrase I would associate with any standard VAG product.

I agree with the reviewer.

Very spartan at base spec. No buttons on the steering wheel! This is the 21St century lol.

They praise where it's due and are informed as to some of the cars issues...namely Road noise, wind noise, slow touchscreen...noisy diesels.

Quite honest I thought

They forgot to mention the old problem of water in the boot, when you leave it in the rain or dewy conditions. They really do need to do something about that issue especially at this price point.

FORD - Fix Or Repair Daily. I have a 2016 Mondeo 1.5ecoboost titanium and it's pretty well spec'd compared to others, I was surprised at the price though - not the low price they used to be

Remember though the octavia price is not particularly high. Its rivals all pitch at around the same price thus the octavia is nothing premium.

The car has lots of design niggles and quirks. Its the sign of budget engineering.

When I was looking a year ago, the S, SE and SE L Octavias were both cheaper and more generously equipped than the competition, particularly the commonly recommended SE.

It gets 5 stars, not many do that on What Car!!

The cars are underequiped but then they are 2-2.5k cheaper than others (if you compare to insignia, mondeo).  I do think its a bit shocking the SE doesn't even have steering wheel controls for the music etc when its pretty difficult to safely change to another song.   Given the octy is in the same group as the astra etc it looks even more spartan.  I didn't buy it for the toys but I do miss my steering wheel controls :(

Don't forget that the Octavia is not in the same class as the Insignia, Mondeo or Passat (that would be the Superb from Skoda).

The Octavia is a C-class car comparable with the Focus, Golf, Astra.

I also think the review is quite fair & the negative points are pretty weak, almost like they had to dislike something.

Nothing is a big reason not to buy one...

Have ford stared to fit the 2.0 turbo from the octy vrs and the golf gti??

What is the car like to drive with 1.5. Does it struggle when loaded up with 5 adults or a boot full.

Yes even very cheap super mini cars mostly have steering wheel controls. The SE looks really poor with that bland wheel.

And that's three stars more than they give the Mercedes A class elsewhere. Almost laughed out loud. I don't often agree with WC, but I'm coming round.

I don't find it to be too much of a slouch, to be fair I've only ever had 4 adults and a fairly empty boot max. It pulls well in all gears and there is an abundance of space in the boot. I went up a well known incline with the cc set to 70 in 6th gear and it did t miss a beat, no struggling or straining. The boot was full but only myself in it. A lot of cars struggle on that stretch, trucks crawl at about 20-30 and my old 1.2tsi 105 monte wasn't too great there

While that's true, I had a vectra before hand and the Octavia is bigger. I could have got an insignia estate but it wasn't as big either

Cheers jonro. i'm starting to think about the 1.5 rather than go for a diesel. I don't do big miles but like the torque of a diesel. Think I need to take one for a test drive.

18 months out of date?

What car do seem to have some odd car categorisation, at 4.7m Octavia is bigger than an Astra

As another example I think they also put the Superb in small executive category at their annual awards, and the winner of the full size executive was only few mm longer.
