Adding DAB and Smartlink to newest model, post build?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm thinking of picking a new SE / SEL or Monte Carlo 1.2 TSI Yeti on lease, but all the good deals seem to be on stock cars, most of which don't come with DAB or Smartlink.

From searching the forum I think i've ascertained that I can get the dealer to add Smartlink for about £150, but i'm wondering about DAB.

Is DAB a totally separate head unit and aerial config to the standard FM rig?

I really don't want to mess about with aftermarket units, I just want it in there looking stock and standard.

Any way to add stock DAB post build?

We've got DAB and Smartlink coming in our new SE Fabia, so would love the same in a Yeti.

Thanks in advance.

Hi zarch

I also enquired about this on my 16 plate post build yeti but was only offered the £599 head unit which is very pricey for DAB. But the dealer can install the unit. This may be the only way to go.

I have just had Smartlink added as well and though it's limited the maps and voice control are great.

Thanks for the reply.

Simpsons have come back and said £296 for the DAB radio and £135 for the Smartlink, added post build.

Either way, pricy options to add to a lease car that i'll only be keeping for 2 years.  Crazy DAB is not standard in this day and age. :)

do a search for smartlink on here, there is a thread that suggests it is not worth the money and a cheap ODB Bluetooth dongle and a app called torque are far cheaper and do the same or even more

I think you are getting confused with Smartgate, he is asking about Smartlink.

Simple

Smartgate sends information from the car to the phone like speed, throttle position etc by Wi-Fi.

Smartlink receives information from the phone and displays compatible apps on the phone screen to the infotainment system via USB cable.

that is why I was assuming smartgate, as from my understanding smartlink requires a new head unit at substantially more then £135

This is from this thread.

I think you can purchase vouchers from eg Superskoda for approx £135 and then get a dealer to activate it ( skoda computer system/ vcds or otherwise, I don't know) for approx £15. Not heard of anyone doing it though.

The earlier post was meant to say, for Smartlink.

That's because no dealer in their right mind would charge £15 to install an activation code they didn't supply.

So, can all dealers supply and activate codes for Smartlink?

All have the capabilities, most have the experience.

The dealer supplied and installed the smartlink for me. For £135. (Hayselden Doncaster)

They left a dvd type case in the car which has several codes and activation numbers as well as an installation proceedure for the technicians. It does indeed require activating from VCDS or whatever it's called as it needs plugging into a computer to activate.

For most people it probably isn't currently worth the money but to get Apple maps display on the large screen makes it incredibly useful for me due to travelling often for work.

Also, Apple maps is both free for an iPhone user and has regular free updates which means that my in car sat nav is always up to date and has the latest POIs etc.

Using Siri for voice control is great when you're in a city for making calls and reading texts aloud but go off the beaten track and lose the 3G/4G signal and it's as useful as a cardboard **** peice!

ODIS is what's used in the main dealer.

When smartlink is installed the car is connected and updated through the central server to add the new features.

It also changes the PR codes stored against that vehicle to include the new equipment.

Thanks for the info James and Bono141.

All the above works equally via android, Android Auto, and Google Maps. Waze is coming soon.

I spec'd Smartlink as it saved £600 over the built in satnav, and no update issues down the line.

DAB and Smartlink are the only 2 options that I specced with our new Yeti SE-L both worth it in my opinion:)

I got Smartlink included with my new Yeti 1.2 Outdoor.  I've just been to Austria and back and found that to get Apple Maps to work in Europe, I had to have a data plan (I'm with Virgin Mobile).  That having been said, it was great.

We're just back from Italy, via Belgium, France, and Switzerland. Google Maps all the way, via Android Auto/Smartlink. Especially helpful via voice control when we were looking for a parking space in Milan within striking distance of the Duomo.

I reckon it used about 250meg there and back with 4G live. It was included with my tariff but if it hadn't have been, Vodafone would have charged 4p a meg, or about £10 for the trip, for the map element.

We'll still be in the EU next year so additional roaming charges should disappear altogether by then, and many UK suppliers are already anticipating that.

Mobile data switched on in Europe just isn't the issue it once was.

Could down load off line maps before you go to reduce data usage.

Yep, that's all I do.

Download from google maps offline areas whichever country I'm in over wifi. (May take more than a single offline area but it's easy enough to do)

All mapping and guidance is then done without data which is handy if there is no signal.

Only data needed is a very small amount if you enable live traffic.

In a Smartlink (AA or Carplay) context, how does switching mobile data off work then?

The head unit just mirrors the phone so whatever your phone will or won't do without data is what the head unit will or won't do.
