But before I get it I need to confirm the question from Pumpin: "Hi,does your car have Fender or Dynaudio system?Could you pls take photo of your car center dashboard to us?We need to help you check these information first."

I've no idea where I would find this info.

Well Dynaudio make speakers (top quality ones too) so I guess the connectors are different on the back for the different speaker systems?

Take speaker cover off should tell you, or just photo all the conns and send them.

I notice your Bolero says Octavia on the back as well, so the units are all the same, maybe just different connections on the various car models.

Pulled the trigger on

I shall report back.

I have a cheap fascia I bought as a gamble a few weeks ago, which isn't quite the right colour/finish, but it will do as a stop gap.(I paid £10 iirc for a used version of http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262410925395 I think)

I also bought the full version of Poweramp from the play store as it's 50p at the moment - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer.unlock&hl=en_GB - may come in handy, seems very customisable :)

Jellybeard just wondered how you're getting on with the Xtrons now you should have installed and used it for a while? :)

thanks in advance

Hi,

I installed it, fiddled with it and ultimately decided it would take too much fiddling for me to be happy with, so moved it on. Maybe I'm too fussy though!

I installed a new firmware (malaysk from XDA) and changed the launcher - everything worked well, but there were some niggles I didn't have time to sort out. With time and perseverance, I think you could end up with a really good end product.

My main niggles were the screen is too reflective, the hardware buttons didn't do everything I wanted, so had to rely on software buttons or screen gestures, which were awkward to use when driving and I couldn't get the radio working well with diversity. I had presumed I needed an adaptor/amplifier, but someone messaged me when I was selling asking if it worked, as he had used an amp and couldn't get signal. The buyer of my unit had a single fakra (I presume no diversity and a simpler system) in a VW Caddy and that seemed to work much better.

I really liked some of the apps (eg sygic satnav, poweramp music player) though and it was stable.

All in all, I think with time, there is potential, but you need to i) choose a unit that has all the hardware buttons (volume, home, back, current apps, power etc) and ii) be prepared to spend a long time fiddling.

I'm glad I gave it a go, as I would always be thinking what if, but I think a VW OEM unit is the way to go, which I'm going to get fitted when I have time.

Thanks Jellybeard, very interesting, even niggles and negative feedback are useful as they help people like me to make decisions as to whether they can be bothered to faff about!

Sounds like the Pumpkin might be a better option, although if using the Malaysk software can still be a problem as Paul refers to.

Paul do you have these same niggles with the Pumpkin or perhaps you have to be more techy to sort them out?

I also have another thread about using SD cards as an alternative to new head unit (just for the music) but I'm having software issues there as well

Are any offering Android Auto yet?

Lee

Anyone know of any ?

I asked the question about the Pumpkin and got a No.

Also I don't have unlimited data, and Google Maps is gonna use that up very quick..

So next question is whats the best Map App that runs offline ?

Tim

I'm using IGO Nexgen from here http://www.gpspower.net/igo-gps-system.html works well as a Sat Nav. The screen is a little reflective, but you get used to it & for the amount of time you look at it its not that bad.I don't  use the Fm radio just DAB, the apk is a pain in the arse as you do have to use the screen to change channels. You can map the steering wheel buttons but I haven't tried yet. All my music in on the sd card & played through the jet audio apk, now you can skip between tracks, pause & mute with the steering wheel controls. I agree with Jellybeard it needs some improvement, but it is getting there. I love mine !!

                              Hope this helps

Thanks Paul

Update Nov 2016:

Still waiting for someone to produce a replacement head unit that supports Android Auto AND at a reasonable price (£250 ish)

Kenwood units with AA are approx £450-£500

None of China units (Xtrons / Pumpkin / Joying etc) support AA.

VW/Audi units approx £700+ if you want DAB and Bluetooth included. Outrageous!  And still no AA support.

My standard fit Bolero does not even support Bluetooth. Pretty poor spec for a top of range VRS model.

My standard fit Bolero does not even support Bluetooth. Pretty poor spec for a top of range VRS model.

The L&K is the top of the range in terms of both spec and RRP. The vRS is the most powerful but as standard doesn't get much.

It's trivial to add OEM bluetooth and A2DP streaming if that's your biggest want.

Android Auto has a standalone mode, if you have a good sized phone and sensibly located mount, there really isn't much need for a AA headunit :)
