Skoda Stereo upgrade, RNS 310 or RNS 315?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I've been thinking about an upgraded stereo for some time now and finally decided to look into it a bit more. I would like Sat Nav and Bluetooth but not 100% on the most suitable system. You guys know far more than me but I am interested in the Amundsen+ or Columbus, I'm also aware of battery drain with my car being an 05/55 reg. What's the difference between RNS 310 and 315? My current stereo is the ****e Stream so no bells or whistles, all suggestions welcome!

Cheers.

I personally would go for the Columbus.

It's got a bigger touchscreen, has internal storage for maps and MP3s, plays better with pre-FL cars (works with maxidot- can be switched between DDP and BAP CAN protocols) and can be updated without having to buy the expensive original SD cards like you have to on the RNS 310/315.

The advantage the RNS 315 potentially has over the Columbus is it is possible to get one with Bluetooth and DAB integrated (although the Columbus was also available with DAB and a Bluetooth module can be added pretty easily and inexpensively).

This has crossed my mind and I have been looking. I'd jump at a good priced one.

Amundsen is based on RNS 310

Amundsen+ is based on RNS 315

The '+' has no bearing on the abilities of the unit.

RNS315 has NAV, and can have a combination of BT/DAB/RVC.

BT is shown as a MAC address on the side, that's *NOT* 00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00

DAB is a round black connector on the back

RVC is a rectangular connector on the back

RNS 510/Columbus is mostly NAV, although the later and more expensive ones can have DAB. (Black round connector)

BT will always be an external unit.

RVC connector is usually there too.

RNS31x are not cheap to update the maps.

RNS510...er, er, er, um......shhhhh ;)

RNS31x is BAP only, so only integrates fully in FL cards. In pre-FL you lose the climate display, the PDC display (but not the beeps), use of MFSW and the MaxiDot connection.

RNS510 will swing both ways, the most useful being MFSW and MaxiDot usage.

There was an RNS315 (BT/DAB/DVC+GPS+Mic) sold, on here, yesterday for £240 delivered. ;)

The RNS310 and RNS315 although very similar to look at are completely different internally and take different versions of maps.

The RNS310 never had DAB, BT or RVC ports.

So, the Amundsen+ is the RNS 315 and could have all what I need? I'm mainly after touch screen, sat nav, GPS, Bluetooth coz I don't have steering wheel controls or reverse parking sensors, won't the Columbus be overkill for the basic controls on my 2005/55 Octy Sport?

Yep. Having played with an Amundsen Plus a few times, I'm surprised why anyone would want one. Other than the onboard bluetooth, everything is smaller, less functional, and even though it boots up faster it's not worth it for me.

RNS315 does have a touch-screen, but most of the functionality can be used through the "real" buttons. (I certainly found it easier than the touch-screen.) If all you want is NAV and BT then just make sure you get the GPS unit, the mic (dead easy to install both bits) and a MAC address other than lots of 0's ;) ;)

And yes, other than the colour of the menus, and the boot logo, RNS315 and Amundsen+ are the same.

Columbus is quite happy without MFSW and MaxiDot, they're not essential to it's use.

Sorry. It was out there for less than 2 hours.

Cheaper than getting Columbus. You can get everything in one box for less than £300.

DAB Columbus' will set you back £700 on ebay, then you'll need to buy the BT too.

There is this non-DAB, for anyone who's interested (NOT MINE):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Seat-RNS-510-Sat-nav-head-unit-with-maps-disc-antenna-/262481398626?hash=item3d1d1c4b62:g:KPoAAOSwvg9XXcJ~

Not a bad deal £330......still needs the BT though.

I do agree the Columbus/BT combination is functionaly far better though......hence having sold the RNS315 instead ;) ;)

The Seat Media systems are all old tech, early lcd screens, small hard drives (30Gb) and low hardware numbers. Also, they have no SD card reader.

Thread revival! I'm now happily back to Skoda ownership in a 2012 Fabia. It only has the basic RCD 310 head unit so I'm either looking to get an aftermarket double din or potentially an RNS 310/315.

Other than nav, the main thing I want is to be able to stream music via Bluetooth and skip tracks on the screen as aux doesn't allow this. Does anyone know if an OEM unit is capable of this, and if so, which one? Alternatively I might just get something aftermarket with Apple CarPlay, but I'd rather go OEM if I can. Thanks!

Edit: I'm open to any of the Skoda touch screen units as long as the cost is ideally around £300 all in with any BT adaptors if required. 510/Columbus could fit the bill potentially!

Yes, but you need to check.

RNS 310/315 (aka Amundsen/Amundsen+) *can* have Bluetooth, they *can* have Bluetooth that's not been activated too. If you look at one of the stickers (right-hand side I think - it's been a while) there will be a "MAC Address" and looks like 00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00. If it is all 0's then the unit does not have Bluetooth. If it's a mixture of numbers and letters (A-F) then it will have Bluetooth. However there was a load of units shipped with the Bluetooth not activated.....you'd need someone with VCDS to activate it for you. There is no "pop it open and pop in a board" option.

If you want to update the maps on these units, be prepared to part with an arm and a leg though. :( :(

  • 1 month later...

Hello all, I am new here and I want some help / information about Amundsen+.

I have preFL 2007 years Octavia, I have fitted Amundsen+. Radio works perfect, bluetooth, navigation and etc, but I can not connect into it with VCDS.  37 block navigation cant be acceced. Gateway shows DTCs but cant enter it. Gateway with K letter, no battery drain. What can be wrong? Thanks.

It's not going to work I doubt. The Amundsen + unit uses BAP protocol communications to talk to the car, and your car uses DDP protocol. Essentially, they don't communicate.

If you had a Columbus then you can use either protocol by selection with vcds, but the Amundsen + doesn't I'm afraid.

Yes I know about protocols. But is that for all who uses this radio with BAP can not access unit with diagnostic? I have read that there is problems with sound and so on, but people connect via VCDS and change settings.

Got an autoscan?

Yea, I will post tomorrow.

Here is my full scan. Since I have Passat B6 in da house with VW RNS315 I have tried switch radios. In Skoda with VW RNS315 problem the same. No Response From Controller...

Then it sounds like a faulty unit. Just check the pins in the Quadlock connector on the Amundsen + unit and make sure the pins are all present and not bent out of place. I've seen bent pins cause problems before where they don't hit the hole in the cars Quadlock block.
