Do i need pd150 head bolts?

Featured Replies

Hi guys im new on here, just a quick question, iv got a fabia vrs with the blt engine, I bought it with a forge front mount installed, iv got a pd160 turbo on the way from darkside along with a egr delete and egr cooler delete, im just wondering will i need pd150 head bolts when i get it mapped to all the new upgrades, im looking to get 200bhp from it, thanks guys

Cant hurt i suppose, better now than later

I would defo get them done, im just about to do mine before getting it mapped.

Pretty much yeah, anything over 170bhp sort of area will be needed.

If you think they were fitted standard on a pd150 golf and pd160 cupra, then the manufacturer thinks they are needed for 150bhp.

The 2nd 90° turn on the head bolts gave me stretch marks on my shoulders, if you haven't done them before I would suggest doing stretches first :D

Nice wee drop of graphite grease on the bolt head helps :)

Need a bigger bar or start going to the gym lol

I agree with Jamie, they are bloody tight!

Use a jack handle on the knuckle bar and your body weight to swing it, piece of cake unless you're a seven stone junkie.

When me and hutchy did mine we used his power bar but maybe we should of put another bar on for better leverage! There's always next time :)

Hahaha thanks for the answers guys, some funny ones there, looks like l be doing them so, didnt think they would be needed under 200bhp

That's me, however, Jamie has boobs.

And to replace them you just remove an old one, torque the new one and do the two 90 degree turns in one go?

Haha I wouldn't say they're 100% man boobs, I would say 40% is muscle 60% is moob :D

When we removed my old ones there was a lot of oil where the bolts come out so had to soak it all up with rag which is the time consuming part, but saying that doing them one by one you soon get through them! :)

I dont think mine has pd150 bolts, might have to look into this as it's quite easy to swap hem over.

I bought the stronger bolts as I read they are needed. However speaking to two different mechanics, they both told me not to bother, as it is not guaranteed that the torque the new head bolts are put under is as much as what the original ones are, from the factory. As the original ones have been on for 100k+ they provide a better seal than taking them out (one by one) and replacing them with higher tensile strength bolts. As well as the possibility of disturbing the head and gasket slightly when taking the bolts out.

Saying all this, I still think I will fit them, as it tends to be what everyone else has done. I wouldn't want to get my car mapped and sorted only to find out shortly afterwards I had a head gasket leak and have a box of brand new pd150 head bolts sat on the side... Screaming "we told you so" at me.

Don't take any notice of those mechanics pub talk idiocy, the reason the torque is higher with ARL bolts is that they're a better grade of high tensile steel and they stretch less so the clamping force is larger for a given angular displacement.

Sepulchrave has spoken. The pd150 head bolts will be fitted.

I fitted them using a guide on here and my fabia stopped using coolant when pushing 1.8 bar of boost (Y) worth if for how cheap they are and ease of fitting

Was the guide on the Fabia 1 page?

Wasn't really a guide... More a collection of information I priced together haha

I basically removed the rocker cover, sucked the oil out from the bolt holes and then went from left to right doing one bolt at a time and tightening them down fully before moving onto the next one. Did the job for me

Perfect thank you very much. I have a Haynes manual so that will make more sense when it comes to the sequence.

Cheers

What a load of guff!

I certainly wouldn't be trusting either of those 'mechanics' to work on my car for sure!
