Yes you can. Brands like Anker and RAV Power both work fine on my GS7 Edge with their 1ft Long USB cables. It doesn't need to be angles to fit inside the Phonebox with the lid covered (but my GS7 Edge is too big to close the cover anyway so not useful for me... Might be useful for you)

Just make sure you get a good quality data sync cable, not just a cheap charge-only cable. If you only get a cable with charging wires (rather than the additional data sync wires) inside the phone can't connect to the car for Android Auto etc.

I bought some of these for my devices usb to micro usb, cost less than a couple of quid from trusty Amazon, delivered in 48 hours for free. They are angled and short so the lid closes fine
