Carista ODB2.... Worth buying or not?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

My Fabia didn't come with smart gate just smart link. After reading about carista odb2 on the forums I am still not sure if worth buying.

I have seen you can make changes to the vehicle, such as enable disable auto lock. Check link below

http://www.caristaapp.com/customizations/?car=skoda_fabia_2011

Cheers guys

I don't have a Fabia MK3, but as I have a Polo 6C 2015, I think that you will find that that quote "Fabia 2011" holds good only for previous model Fabia, for your car, if you have a new Fabia MK3, I think that after buying Carista etc, you will need to reg for becoming a tester for the latest but not yet rolled out, version of Carista.  Read up a bit more on this site to make sure that you know what you need to buy to get you going.

Thanks you. I will do. :-)

  • 3 weeks later...

Right so it seems that Carista V3 has been released, sounds good - but it seems like anyone with latest Fabia/Polo/Ibiza (probably + others) still have not got "customisation" yet!

Ah well, until then it will be the usual VCDS to do customisation I suppose!

Ordered Carista last night.... awaiting delivery today... Cant wait to play with it and enable features locked!

Sweet!!

If I can I will post installation photos.

Well pictures aren't really needed as the diagnostic port is located under the drivers side above the right knee.

I connected carista to the port and to my surprise no customisations can be done to my fabia colour edition 2016 model....!!!! even though they state you can on caristaapp website.

so disappointed and annoyed over this!!!

Can you contact them to possibly resolve or be refunded?

I think that the solution to this issue could be to enroll for the Beta testing of new software.  I have not read the fine detail on their site recently, but I think that it was possibly written before the new Fabia was launched, so if so, what they have written is correct.  Though, it did make it clear that while Polo 6R was covered for customising, Polo 6R 6C was not.

All these companies that need to reverse engineer stuff will always lag behind the "present and now" - even VCDS lagged with the latest Polo 2017MY it seems, but after someone posted on that, I suggested updating to the latest issue of VCDS which strangely had just be released that day, and that fixed the problem.

Edit:- I've just checked the Carista site and they quote "okay" for Fabia 2011>2016, but "not okay" for 2016>2017 - so, I'd reckon that your car must be a late 2016MY or early 2017MY car.

Yeah your quite right there, reverse engineering companies do lack behind...!! My Fabia is an early 2016 as its 6 months old. That puts is February build. I am awaiting a response from Carista to see what they say. I have sent my car feedback yesterday. Lets see what they say. Otherwise I have bought the hardware which  will sit there gathering dust....!!!

2011-2016 doesn't really correlate to a particular Fabia model. Wasn't the Fabia II facelifted in 2011 or so, getting the newer electricals from the Golf 6 generation, along with the TSI and CR TDI engines? I wonder if they mean that.

It does not matter, what they quote is what it covers, by the way, their quote of "2016" will mean up to MY2016 which are cars built after maybe production week 26 in 2015.

Or, they've got it wrong ;-P

Well Mk2 Face Lifts were 2010-2014-15 and different in enough ways from All New 3rd Generation Fabias from November 2014 on

and lots of advertisers use duff gen.

Or, they've got it wrong ;-P

I think that maybe some text is missing in their site, I've forgotten what it said, but as my main point of interest when ordering Carista was a VW Polo, the site was very clear in that Polo 6R 20?? > 201? were covered for faults and customisation, Polo 6R 6C was only covered for faults.  I'm sure that Ibiza and Fabia will also have an extra bit to define that version, like the Polo 6R has a "C" on its build label, to separate that later version from the early one. If that info had been on the Carista website, it would have been very clear when the customising option stopped for Fabia - well at least for V3 of Carista.

The range of cars that they are attempting to cover keeps growing so they have taken on a huge task, which is not of much interest to someone that buys it and finds that it does not work for them.

Edit:- I've checked that site for "vehicles"  Polo 6R and Polo 6C listed, which kind of helps: Ibiza Mk4 and Ibiza Mk4 listed, not very handy: Fabia and Fabia listed, even less handy!

Today I received a response from Carista technical support and they offered me to join the beta testing for their software... I accepted... awaiting enrolment information.

what part of manchester are you from vc-10?

Not far from Sale actually, I'm in Withington!

Re the Polos and Fabias etc etc- the 'generation' of electrical equipment can be deducted from the radio and the gauge cluster. The Polo 6C (post facelift 6R, or as VW often puts it, 'Phase II') correlates to the Fabia III, and the Mk.4 Ibiza 'phase III', as in after the second facelift. All these cars have the touchscreen MIB II entertainment systems, and are electrically related to the Mk.7 Golf (MQB). The Fabia II 'phase II' and Polo 6R (pre facelift Mk.5) along with the Ibiza Mk.4 with a white screen in the dash cluster are like a Mk.6 Golf ('White DIS'). The pre-facelift Fabia II and the early Ibiza Mk.4s are like the Mk.5 Golf ('Red DIS').

The 'Red DIS' and 'White DIS' had a lot of commonality, and the crossover between them was hazy. Mk.5 Jettas and B6 Passats in particular can be either, depending when the car was built. With VWs, the radio is a big clue- the 'Red DIS' cars had the RCD-300/-500/RNS-500 radios, which have selection buttons on the side of the screen, while the newer 'White DIS' cars have the RCD-210/-310/-510/RNS-310/-315/-510. However, late Mk.5 Golfs sometimes had a 'Red DIS' electrical system and a later radio (especially base model cars with the RCD-210). It is a minefield!

At least for us- our cars are Polo 6Cs in a different bodyshell, as electrically they are both 'MQB' designs. This is why a few of the mods for the MQB based Octavia III work for the Fabia, if those modules can do it. The crossover for the Fabia II correlated with engine changes (as it did for the Ibiza Mk.4)- the introduction of the 1.2 TSI and the common rail TDIs (the 1.2, 1.6, and 2.0- the cheating ones!), and of course a slight facelift.

The reason Carista is listing the Polo 6C as being 'fault only' is that it'll probably just be working as a standard OBD II tool, which car manufacturers are legally required to maintain compatibility with.

Apologies for the wall of text!

Glad they helping. Can you let us know how it all goes and keep us updated. I would like to buy one but only for customisation, so won't bother with it if it only allows diognostics. Also, if it's ok, a list of the things you can do so can see if it's worth it.

Thanks, Alexandros. :)

no problem alexandro, will do. your not greek are you?

Actually I'm almost certain that things are a bit better than that as vc-10 put it, you should be able to read all that car's smart modules using Carista V3, when I tried that with Carista V2, most of the smart modules were missing - Carista just says "failed to read" I think, which you might think translates to a comms issue, when in fact it also means that that module does not exist. VCDS checks for all modules by default but skips any that don't exist and reports ones with comms issues.

Edit:- so it is only the customising routines that have not been worked out and added.

Thanks man. :)

I am indeed! half Greek-Cyproit, half English, born and raised in Scotland. :P

Is the 'Spartan' in your name an indication of your nationality or just cause you enjoyed the movie? ;)

It is just the customisations that have not been worked out as the diagnostic and service work just fine
