Diesel Injector Additive

Featured Replies

After long running saga of 1.9 PD very poor running after a cam-belt change and and service, the latest move was replacement (2nd hand) injectors and new injector loom, fitted by mechanic (not the ones that did the jobs that started all the problems). Running better but still not quite right (will try a longer run tomorrow, Laphroig in hand now so not going out again tonight). No complaints about latest work as it was not undertaken as a guaranteed fix and it was my choice to source 2nd hand injectors. Mechanic suggests some injector cleaner additive would be worth a try - Anyone got any experience of particular products?

Thanks

I have used RedX fuel system cleaner which I buy when its on offer at the local Tesco. Not sure have effective it is but it probably won't do any harm.

That's useful to know, I've not had much confidence in these sort of products in the past (and on the basis of if it ain't broke don't fix it still wouldn't use them on a perfectly functioning engine) but I'm at the stage of being ready to give anything a try.

I think the idea of these cleaners is to remove carbon deposits off the tips of the injectors  giving a better spray pattern. Halfords sell a variety but I am sure others on the forum can give more advice.

Yes should be worthwhile as given that injectors are 2nd hand, even if they are OK, they will may have been unused for some time.

I'm a long way from Halfords but will have a look in local car parts/accessory shop today.

Thanks

I used STP diesel injector cleaner.  Good results in the short term.

HOWEVER, after much use of that, other products, cleaning the EGR etc etc, it turned out that sh1tty TESCO diesel was the cause off all SWMBO's rough running / no power problems  - for years on end!

Switched to BP - it was like a new engine.

Thanks all

There's not much choice for me locally so all options not available without a lengthy wait. Went for Redex, no obvious improvement but haven't done many miles since so wouldn't expect anything yet. Possibly a bit more black reek when you rev - I'm hoping that's it doing it's job. Having said that I am in no way sure that the underlying problem is with anything that you would expect a fuel system cleaner to improve.

I always use V Power Nitro Fuel as it's got additives anyway (supposedly), it does make a difference to the engine running compared to standard Diesel. In addition I use Redex Diesel (bout 1/4 bottle) per £20-25 of V Power Nitro Diesel. On my last 4 fill up's i swapped that for Wynns Injector Cleaner and i noticed a massive difference with that. Redex keeps on top of the normal running for me in addition to the V Power fuel but the injector cleaner I used for the first time recently but I'm thinking of using that every 3-6 months.

Mate, going back to the first thing you mentioned which sends alarm bells ringing "After long running saga of 1.9 PD very poor running after a cam-belt change and and service"

The car should, if done right, not develop running issues after a belt change unless its been done wrong?? Is that what you meant or did i pick this up wrong?

You may have had this fixed by now after me checking the dates haha

I have used Autol Desolite DX/W for all my marine- and autodiesels since 1981.

Once had a checkup on the 5 injectors in one of my MB 300GD's.  It had done around 300k km.
Workshop told me the injectors were very clean, and opening pressures/spread/atomization were as new.

Agreed.

It now appears that at some point the supply and return hoses from fuel tank to filter got reversed. - Not by me for sure, and a bit of a mystery.

Service did include new diesel filter but all the info I can find suggests no need to undo any hoses - just unscrew top of canister with no need to disturb hoses.

Hoses are now on the right way round and car is running a lot better ... still not quite 100% in terms of pull, smoothness or economy though.

Wondering now what other damage could result from running with hoses reversed

The Forte Diesel Turbo Cleaner is meant to be really good. Redex I don't think works as well, even if it's just from a quantity perspective, there's less of the stuff.

Have you given it an italian tune-up? The PD engines love to be driven. My Fabia has come alive from letting the revs go high and driving it hard.
