Electro mechanical parking Brake

Featured Replies

Can someone tell me how this EMPB is safer than a mechanical lever and cables? I understand that the unit is very criticle to correct working due to battery voltage, so if the battery voltage is low it will refuse to unlock???? I also understand that you need a computer geek to unlock the rear disc pads to change them !!??

So if you brake down and your 4flash system has been on for sometime the voltage could drop to the point the handbrake will not release??? so how do you get the car onto a breakdown wagon??

The whole concept of the EMPB seems wrong to me ! from a saftey viewpoint so if someone out there could educate me into changing my mind over this new way of re inventing something which worked very well for billions of cars and vans for decades now we are being pushed into yet again a software program in a computer, do we really need to go this far ??

I would be glad to read your comments.

Why ask about an "Electro mechanical parking Brake"  when the Yeti has a normal cable operated handbrake?

Its a general question regarding the change to an EPMB on vehicles

I didn't think that i was limited to asking questions ONLY about the Yeti on this forum,

Does asking this question pose a problem with the guide lines of 'question asking' on the Briskoda site? are contributers not allowed to think outside the box?

You could consider posting in the General Car Chat section, that way you may get a wider response. Though after reading your latest post, don't be surprised if you don't get many responses.

You may also want to consider switching to decafé! ;)

As Fin69 states, there are better places on Briskoda where it will gain a wider audience and response.....so that's where I'll move it.

It's not safer, it just frees up cabin space and allows the designers a bit more leeway.

I'm not  fan of them myself.

The pneumatic park brakes on heavy trucks have operated on a similar "if there isn't enough force available to release, stay on" since they were invented.

I once used to build truck mixers and it was not uncommon to

come in on a Monday morning to find a couple of trucks would

not move due to low air pressure (then came the revving of

engines for ages to bring the pressure up)

I tried a car with EPMB and could not get along with it, I think I

just distrusted it.

I've had several.

With a manual gearbox and only an electric parking brake I find them frustrating. I'd rather have a manual handbrake

With an automatic gearbox and an hydraulic auto hold system they can be sublime. The parking brake is only really used when the engine is off. This is my ideal setup.

Hate them, work in a garage and have seen numerous fail. I also distrust start/stop systems and self parking systems though, as I'm just waiting for the day one malfunctions on a motorway. I know theres safety mechanisms to stop that happening, but thats designed by the same folk who can't design an easy way to change a sidelight bulb...

Like my sis's Jazz where the instructions for changing head or side light bulbs start "put the car on full lock and remove the front wheelarch liner"?

yes but mainly more unreliable and expensive to replace    'shud imagine verry popular with "the trade"    :p   que very old joke about "popular prices" :x

Daughter's got one on her Laguna. She tells me it's just drive off as normal and it will auto release. I just wonder how much extra strain the clutch is getting . On th flat, with a manual handbrake, I often just take it off and drive off. On a hill, I know when to release it through experience.

When at a junction or traffic lights etc. some cars use the Electric Parking brake which is slow to release and this system is using the brake motors every time you stop.

Some cars use auto hold which uses Hydraulic Brake pressure to keep a car stationary, when you pull off the brakes release instantly meaning no strain on the clutch and no added wear on the parking brake motors and assembly. The Electric parking brake is only needed when the car is parked and engine off.

Not sure what system the Laguna has.

My girlfriends sister had a Scenic with it, cost almost £1000 to sort it...

'good luck with that, it should get you on your way',

( or just call the 4th Emergency Service or a Low Loader.) An Ambulance as well if you bop yourself on the bonce.

TBH there are threads in the MK3 Octavia section with people having the manual handbrakes failing & the "parked" cars rolling down hills into other peoples property.

All systems have weaknesses, I always park car in gear (manual).

As for EPB which I have on MK7 Golf along with autohold....I find it very good, only comes on when seatbelt off & engine running, so most of the time Autohold function is used.

Autohold just locks the pressure you have applied to the brakes via the solenoids in the ABS unit.

The only problems I have is getting the finesse of a laden car on a very steep hill & using autohold to drive off from a stop. However I tend to use the EBP manually to hold as I find the Autohold releases too early for my liking in these situations. I might alter with VCDS.

I have VCDS so winding back the pistons is easier now as I don't have to get out the piston windback tool & faf around!

Worst case with EPB is it locks on, worst case with manual, locks off (i.e. no handbrake)

Also in an emergency you can use the EPB manually better & more effectivity than a manual handbrake.

With fronts angled on to pavement , presumably ?
