New Monte owner

Afternoon all

We just pulled the trigger on this 105bhp Montecarlo with tech pack. Its done 36k and feels tight as a drum, the gearbox is just lovely and it makes a nice growl. Pretty happy with the sound quality of the stereo too. However we noticed on startup from stone cold there was a rattle for a good 2 or 3 seconds. We shut it down then restarted but the rattle was gone and no rattle when starting from hot. However a quick google revealed the timing chain issue so we negotiated the price down to cover repair costs. The 3yr warranty ran out end of June this year so im wondering if its worth approaching my local Skoda dealer to ask if they will offer a good will repair or at least pay a proportion.

You might have missed the boat on a repair, would have been better to negotiate with the selling dealer to get it fixed before you bought it rather than a drop in price which they probably had room to do anyway. It would cost the garage less to repair it themselves than it would cost you somewhere else. The garage could have then negotiated with Skoda?

You will love the monte, it's a cracking we car and pretty solid too. I would also check for the notorious pull on the steering and a creak from the steering when going from lock to lock when stationary. Also check the headlight alignment, that is often set to the lowest MOT tolerance and it needs to be right up at the top end. other than that there are no other massive recurring issues.

Enjoy the car

Thanks I dont disagree with you but a repair was not offered only a reduction in price. We loved the car so decided to take the discount. Not so bothered about the cost of repair to be honest. Not sure if we want all the faff of trying to get a goodwill gesture from Skoda but do care about getting it done properly. Had one quote of £340 from a travelling mechanic and £600 from a VAG specialist.

Are you not as well just spending the money buying a Skoda Warranty for 12 months.

It can not be a known issue if Skoda UK are not doing a service campaign to replace the chain tensioner with the updated and not faulty version.

Have you actually contacted Skoda UK Customer Services on the Timing Chain / Tensioner issue.

It is not a Goodwill or out of Warranty issue if the car has the Fundamental Design / Manufacturing / quality control issue and

it was not dealt with while in warranty while a known issue.

Good ideas there I have spoken to my local skoda dealer today who said they would need it overnight and stick it on diagnostics. If no problem found then there would be a charge for the diagnostics. But they would have no problem taking it up with Skoda if a problem was found. I assume if I go direct to Skoda they will want the car inspected by a member of their dealer network.

Who did you speak to at the Dealers, Service Reception staff / Service Manager or Master Technician, or someone else?

why would the sticking it on the Diagnostics require having it overnight.?

Why is it going on the diagnostics anyway, not that that is a problem trying to find a problem?

They would need to measure the length of the timing chain.

He described himself as the service manager and explained that he wanted the car overnight to let it get properly cold so they could listen to it from stone cold. I agree not sure what diagnostics would tell them when there are no warning lights.

They are very often Tommy. Deaf dumb and blind.

Plenty have heard the noise, and it is passed of as ' they all do that', they need to do the measurement.

They can listen to it for 'Free',  (that is the goodwill bit.)

and they can get paid if the Master Tech recommends that it is checked to see if the new parts need fitted.

That is what Skoda UK can pay for out of Manufacturers Warranty or not.

Good luck.

Interesting can anybody else verify this ?

I called my skoda dealer again today to get a quote to replace the chain etc. They quoted £600 for the full 'kit'. The guy went onto say though that it could be caused by the oil filter or oil filter flap not being fitted correctly or being left closed. He said they had a car in recently and found it was this that was causing it so if this is the problem you have then the chain etc wont need replacing.

That was happening, firstly when the wrong filters were being used, there were a few cases of that with members on here,

then over tightening of the filters at Skoda Main dealer services.

Thanks Jase

I think I must take it to my Skoda main dealer for inspection and go from there.

Ok complete u turn just spotted last service was by an independant so Im certain Skoda will throw out any kind of claim. Im taking it to my indie instead now. He thinks a flush may resolve it. He had a Golf 1.2tsi in with the same problem and an engline oil flush resolved it he said. I think its worth a punt.

Spend on the flush if you like, no harm done,

but getting the oil hot then changing the Oil & filter would do.

Then use 5w 40 Full Synthetic (VW 502 00) & not 5w 30 Full Synthetic Long Life (VW504 00)

?

Is there an invoice that covers the last Service by the Independent to show what oil was used.?

Some have been known to put in Semi Synthetic.

Thanks GOS

The car has just had a service a couple days ago and on startup from cold there was no noise but then after about a minute of starting there was a rattle for around 2 - 3 seconds then it stopped. We have been using the car today and after leaving it for around 2 or 3hrs there have been no further rattles but I guess its still hot.

I looked up the engine No on the V5 which shows it is CBZBE10211 so I guess this is an engine which could be afflicted ?

I also discovered the last two services by the prev owner were by an independant so I dont I suppose I stand any chance of a repair under warranty ?

If it was still under warranty then it would still be a valid claim if the indy used was vat registered and had used genuine Skoda parts. However as its warranty has run out, then Skoda will be less inclined to offer good will gestures. It can't hurt to try though, you never know!

Started from cold this morning absolutely no noise. I think we will still get the flush done but keep an eye or an ear out for rattling. Bloody brilliant little car though

Right back to ebay to sort out a spare wheel and jack etc.

I have a new spare wheel from my monte for sale if your interested. Only about a year old.

How much do you want for it homesqueeze and will it fit in the recess allowing the boot floor to sit flat ?

  • Author

Sorry man I found a cheap mint Polo wheel with tyre on the bay of e. Thanks again for the offer

Edited by maccap

OK, no worries. You will have no problem fitting it in the boot recess. I have a full size alloy spare in mine and boot floor still sits flat.

Thanks Homesqueeze.

In further news this morning again no rattling from cold start.

Rattlegate continues .......

Yet again no rattle this morning. I have it booked in for an oil flush next week but im wondering if I should leave well alone or get them to give it an oil & filter change just to make sure it has the correct filter and 5W 40 fully synth in it. I dont know what the dealer put in it Im assuming 5W 30 but I have no idea and neither will they.

Thoughts ?
