Paint Protection and Polishing

Featured Replies

Not Skoda specific but having recently polished my Superb with Mer polish and then wax it looks amazing

I really want to give my partners Titanium Focus the same treatment as it looks great when the panther black is sparkling .

ISSUE she has paint protection applied when it was new in 2012...it's not stopped swirls chips from occuring but does stop bird mess and tree sap from blemishing the paint.

However the paint is looking a bit tired and could do with a damn good polish buff and wax but

Can you polish this ? Surely it would go hazey?

Is it still even there after 4 years ?

Can it be removed with something like Panel Wipe?

Any ideas ??

Many thanks

Ben

Aftertoon Ben,

Personally I'd remove the old wax/sealant that was applied I gather by Ford (highly doubt much is left after 4 years). I'd wash the car with something like G3 bodyprep shampoo or an APC diluted to get rid of the wax, maybe a clay car or claymit if that doesn't work. Then simply polish and give it a good even layer of wax, a decent wax will give you as good if not better protection than what was previously applied, just remember to keep on top of it haha.

My mechanic recommended Panel Wipe to remove any oil or wax like you would for bare metal before spraying/under coat.

I've never used a clay and before so unsure how to get good results..I fear I may damage the paint....

And I agree with you that a decent polish and wax make is important..I used a mixture of Autoglym and Mer product's..... going on purely reviews and I'm impressed with both makes.

Next is a good leather cleaning brush I was thinking a toddlers nail brush would be suitable as they are soft but will still clean

I am a bit OCD when it comes to a clean car mine washed and hovered weekly .my partners car ..well she has never washed it herself in 4 years..that's my privilege.....can sometimes fill more than a carrier of rubbish every few weeks...does anyone elses partner have the same!e habit for footwell basket ball ????

I've never used panel wipe to strip wax so I wouldn't want to comment on that way of removing, as simple detox shampoo from halfrauds would work fine.

I'm just the same every Saturday the car gets a bath and inside is hoovered religiously. I have full leather interior in my Fabia, recently removed all the interior into my living room and spent all night using Dr Leather Liquid cleaner and a sonax leather brush and would highly recommend! Looks brilliant and smells like new now too.

Don't get me started on my missus, I clean the house and the cars haha!

I agree with Joe, the protection applied when you bought the car will be all but gone, so dont worry about that.

Give it a good wash and use a little soft brush with an all purpose cleaner (APC) to get in all the shut lines around lights, trims and badges.

Once washed use a clay mitt to rid the car of contaminants (£12 down at halfords). You wont damage the paint in the slightest, but it will ensure you paint is in perfect order before you apply your polish. The paint will be like glass and you will want to re-do your car.

Panel wipe is used in the detailing world for wiping a panel after machine polishing, you remove the oils in the polish but keep the machined finish ready for your wax or sealant to bond properly to bare paint. Sometime the oils in polishes dont allow other products to bond correctly on top. If you washed the car and then wiped a car over with panel wipe you wouldnt really be doing much other than dragging any dirt left across the paint. So in answer to your quetion, you dont need to bother about panel wipe.

Wash

APC for the fiddly bits

Rinse

Clay (new bucket of warm water with a drop of shampoo or use a trigger spray to wet each panel as you pass with clay mitt)

Wash and rinse again

Dry

Polish

Wax

Tea and admire

I would highly recommend the G3 clay mitt, used clay bars for a year or two which I still use for the harder to reach areas but the mitt is much quicker! They're very durable as well
