1.6TDI Engine Performance

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

New to the forum and Skoda network... Currently in process of replacing my 2012 B7 Passat company car.

Down to 2x contenders.

Passat SE Business 2.0Tdi Estate

Superb SE Business 1.6Tdi Estate

Our Fleet options are now majority 1.6Tdi bar the Passat which is offered with the 2.0Tdi 150.

I have had a Passat Estate Demo which i liked, but having currently a Passat wanted something different, plus Superb you get more kit for the £s.

I have now this weekend the Superb.

The 1.6Tdi seems much rougher under idle and under acceleration than my current 2012 2.0Tdi.

Any owners or drivers of the 1.6, is this what will expect from mine?.

Hoping to get order in soon, very much favour currently the Superb only thing i am questioning is the smaller capacity 1.6Tdi.

Cheers

Hi Stuart & Welcome!

I have the 1.6TDi in my current S3 & had it in my S2 (both Combi 's so heavier) & the difference is HUGE, firstly the bhp has gone up to 120 from 105 & also the chassis is way lighter than the last model so performance is vastly improved as well as fuel economy. Also the new box is 6 speed as opposed to the old 5 speed which was my biggest criticism of the last model. While I've not driven the 2lt I can honestly say the 1.6 Diesel engine is more than capable in the S3 & would highly recommend it unless you are after performance then you should go with the 2.0lt Passat, other wise the 1.6lt is an ideal engine for it.

I too have the 1.6 TDi 120PS in my S3 (a 'S' spec) and having driven smaller noisier diesels before (my 1.4 TDi Polo sounds like a tractor!) I don't really notice the noise.  In fact, on the occasion I drive with the window open and the sound reflects off say a fence or wall I think it sounds quite nice - bit gutsy.  Like the other poster I haven't driven a larger TDi and would appreciate they are probably smoother, but as far as power etc goes I haven't found it lacking - even towed an older Passat the other day with no problems whatsoever!

As far as economy goes, I think my Fuelly data is in my sig, but getting around 55mpg whcih is close to what my previous 1.2TDi Ibiza Ecomotive was getting - though I do now do a 115 mile round trip commute with all bar 5 miles on dual carriageway so that helps!

PS - I'm biased, but I also think the Superb looks nicer than the new Passat, which seems a bit bland... :D

I have the 2.0ltr and the only question I would ask you is, do you often carry heavy loads?

If the answer is yes, then take the 2.0 Passat as the 1.6tdi will struggle more. I took my family of 4 persons up and over the Alps last year in a 184ps Octavia VRS estate. Even it struggled on the steepest bits as we were fully loaded with holiday gear.

That's not to say the 1.6tdi couldn't have cut it, but it would have been a much slower trip up and over with much lower gear usage.

If your commute is motorway then take the 1.6, if it's varied and you carry heavy stuff often, take the 2.0tdi. I can't say the 150bhp is fast because it isn't, but it's extra dose of torque is very handy when required.

Why cant you get the 2.0rdi Superb as thats cheaper than the Passat in the same business trim ?

I took my 2.0tdi to Holland last month loaded to the max with family and luggage plus wine and beer!!

It pulled well but could feel the weight slowing it down, once it was cruising it was more than fine but had to switch out of the ECO profile to get more of the power.

If you do test one, ensure you take the car out of ECO mode.

Best bet it to test drive one with 3 of your heaviest friends!

I had the 1.6 S2 Greenline and now have the S3 150 bhp 2 litre.  The 1.6 struggled a bit fully laden whereas the 150 bhp inspires a bit more confidence when merging/overtaking.  I test drove the S3 1.6 and didn't feel a huge difference over my S2.  I suspected that the gap between my non-compliant (emissions-wise) 1.6 and the S3 compliant 1.6 wasn't huge in terms of power.

I welcome these comments on the S3 1.6 compared with 2.0 as I am possibly looking at 1.6 tdi SE Business DSG estate when I change cars next year. My driving is mostly motorway not fully loaded or towing and lots of stop start traffic unless by miracle our roads get better in the next year.

At moment looking at red or white one.

Does the SE Business come with 8 inch screen now on later models ?

I have reversing camera on existing car but would have to just have parking sensors on S3 and do people find this is enough to assist ?

I've had a Superb mk2 and a Mk3 and only ever had rear sensors. I live in a busy city and never have problems parking or judging the extremities of the vehicle. YMMV.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have had 2 S2 superbs with the 2.0 engines, now have the S3 1.6tdi DSG, the 1.6TDI as you say is a lttle less refined at idle but with DSG it pulls away very swiftly & smoothly, the difference with the smaller engine for me is only felt when you want to accelerate at high speeds, other than this very happy with the motor.

I only went for the 1.6tdi over a 2.0 so I could get DSG and very happy I did, personally if your opting for manual transmission I would go for the 2.0 passat.

The 1.6 is actually smoother/quieter than the 2.0 due to an increased stroke to reduce it down to 1.6 (it's the same principal engine as the 2.0).

As above the 1.6 in the new Superb now has 120bhp but interesting the same 184 ft-lb of torque as the old 105bhp version.

It comes down to your types of journeys and how often you will have the car loaded up with things/people as the 2.0 will obviously fair better with that.

Took delivery of my Combi 1.6TDI SE Business on the 30th June, and have done approx. 2500 miles in it so far.

Mine has the 6" screen- so I presume it's one of the last of the MY16 cars.

I've come to it from a Peugeot 508 saloon 1.6HDI, which was also 120PS, but had covered 160,000 miles over 4 years- it was effectively completely knackered.

Initial thoughts-

Car is very practical, yet a good looking estate- and has lots of toys for the P11d value- the company I work for has for some reason removed it from their list now, and mine is the only one in the fleet- and I have already had two colleagues contact me who are unhappy they can't get the same car.

Screen system works well- DAB radio and sat Nav streets ahead of what was in the Peugeot. (Identical almost to the system in my wife's 2016 Golf GTD)

Feels safe and solid/well built

Very comfortable.

Cons-

1.6 is so far a bit underpowered for the type of roads I drive- based in West Wales, of the 2500 miles covered, less than 100 would have been motorway miles, and for the roads around here, you need to be able to overtake quickly and safely- I don't feel I can in the Superb, to the level I'd like to- I had hoped it would have freed up a little by now.

MPG- seems to be mid to high 40s most days- probably indicative of the roads around here- but less than the Peugeot used to manage.

Android auto- is crap.

On the whole, am pleased with it, but not blown away. I was in two minds whether to go for the Octavia 2.0tdi or the Superb 1.6- and on balance went for the Superb because of the spec really. If you can get it- get the 2.0TDI- which I'm sure will be more suited- particularly if you're driving on rural roads like I do. Stepping from the wife's Golf GTD into the Skoda, you barely notice the difference- until you press the accelerator that is...
