I was wondering whether all new vrs will now be fitted with brake assist. I wish mine would have it! i once drove a toyota corrolla tsport with brake assist it was excellent, when you braked heavily it basically put all maximum effort on for you it was great i thought especially in an emergency stop situation,

The 2006 model year innovations

An important innovation in the Fabia model range is the use of the Dual Rate mechanical braking assistant that is currently fitted in the Octavia and Superb models. The Dual Rate system has two levels of boosting the braking effect. If a relatively small force is applied to the brake pedal, i.e. gentle braking, the system acts as standard braking system. On the other hand, when emergency braking is needed and the system registers a stronger force on the pedal, the brake assistant's effect increases significantly, i.e. the pressure in the braking system is higher than in a standard system with the same force on the brake pedal. In practice this system is extremely useful in critical driving situations where it allows the maximum pressure in the braking system and the corresponding maximum braking effect to be achieved more quickly. The inner transmission ratio of the braking assistant (its effect) is changed after the specific limit value of the braking system pressure is attained. This system will be fitted in all Fabia cars combined with ABS or a higher braking system as standard. The Dual Rate system helps to shorten the braking distance and increase driving safety.

i find with the vrs when approaching eg a car to stop i never seem brake hard enough and panic at the last moment i suppose this is due to the high speeds you can easily do in the vrs and the poor standard brake setup!

I drove my sisters Clio while I was waiting for the Fabia to arrive and that had brake assist. So I thought id test it one day....holy **** it worked. Really well! It was weird, even after taking my foot off the brake it was still braking. It must have prevented loads of front end crashes, but at the same time people behind can't stand a chance if they dont have it fitted :confused: So end up slamming into the back of you!

i must say i really did like this feature, i wish that is was on the fab vrs from first production.

What age is your car?

Brake assist would have been fitted on 06 model year, which come out around august last year.

Do you know the chassis number at the point brake assist was added. My vRS was new end Sept 05 . Does it have this brake assist?

My car is 05 reg i had it june last year so doesn't look like it has it :(

maybe this could sort the some braking issues found by other Fabia VRS drivers?

do you think the whole system will be uprated along with the electronics? i guess so..."the pressure in the braking system is higher than in a standard system". Has anyone got a newer version VRS after september 05 that could comment on brakes?

mine will be 06 when i get it in march so will have this sytem on it.

I used to have brake assist on my old C2 GT, and I hated it! it would come in under normal spirited driving!!! I would be comming up to a roundabout, brake hard , the hazzard flashers would come on, and the brake assist would completely mess up my carefully judged braking by slamming them on much harder than I wanted stopping me shorter than I wanted, and confusing people with the hazzard lights! glad my fabia hasn't got brake assist, and hope the new one has a better system than the one in the GT ....

To be honest until i read this thread i didnt know brake assist was on a Fabia let alone actually noticed if it was fitted.

Basically they had to be - EU Rules. Hance all the old stock MG Rovers had to be registered by the end of 2005.

Don't know exactly what was changed (not a techie) but not a great deal.

However all the Fabia SDi's have been replaced by TDi's - no great loss

Yep, I have and this explains why it is impossible to finely modulate the brakes when you are going 8 or 9 10ths. The symptoms are thus:

You approach a bend and start building up the brake force. At a certain level of braking pressure ( and nowhere near what I would call emergency braking), the servo assistance seems to become higher, increasing the braking force and making smooth progress close to impossible unless you ease up on the pace a bit.

I thought it was down to the pad compound and was looking forward to changing them, but if my car does have this feature (and the build date would suggest it does), it does not ruin the car, but it is a backward step from a drivers point of view. When you are going 10/10ths, it makes judging the braking less easy as the pedal pressure required is disproportionate to braking force making it hard to judge the braking inputs when trail braking.

The systems saving grace is that unlike some other systems, at least it lets go when you ease off the pedal. As a driver aid on some less sporty models, I suppose it will save someone too stupid to press the pedal harder if they want to stop quicker, but on the VRS it has no place IMO.

Why cant people just press the bl00dy pedal a bit harder? Nanny state blah blah blah.
