HID fog?

Featured Replies

Just wandering if anyone has put a h1 hid bulb in a foglight?

I know people have had issue's with led's.

I have just enabled DRL's and thought they looked very yellow.

If they can be fitted can they be dimmed with VCDS?

Just throwing it out there....

don't get the ebay link I had a set that looked identical in design on my mk7 fiesta and the light output is non existent.... looks cool though

And there we have the issue.

People who want the front fogs to be of any use will leave well alone - a "yellow" bulb will work best and, as it is foggy when you are using them, nobody cares what they look like.

If you care "how they look" then you are using them incorrectly and almost certainly ****ing off other drivers.

I hardly ever use fog lights.

Which is why i have activated DRL function.

I wanted HID to be a little brighter and not yellow for DRL function, not fog lights.

In my opinion fog lights are pretty useless anyway.

I have no intention of blinding anyone in the day using DRL daytime driving lights.

Being activated with VCDS as a proper function mean's they work correctly as a DRL should.

Unlike other car's which stay on with dipped beam, these don't.

I get what your saying but for the octavia i don't see any issue's.other marque's yes i do.and i agree.

Please if you have nothing productive to say then please refrain from doing so.I don't want a debate.

As far as I know HIDs don't dim, it's not how they work.

So, running at full power, they'll probably just blind everyone coming towards you. The whole "installing HIDs in reflectors" thing has been done to death on here.

Given the choice from your original posting, I'd look at complete unit LEDs.

I have never been blinded by a DRL.

I can't see how a hid bulb during daytime is brighter than a LED.

Led drl is much brighter than any HID bulb?

Edit there is less lumens in a HID bulb than a LED one so how will it make any difference?

Don't get hid, 99.9% your lighting module will fry

Not strictly true. On the early mk2 Superb they used the main xenon bulb as a DRL. it was run at a lower power than when dipped on proper.

However, don't know if that requires a special controller and ballast to manage it

If it was any good, it would have been carried on though the life of the MK2 ;)

Must have been quite complicated though as, if it was easy to dim, they'd be all over ebay.

The LED DRLs on my car dim to act as sidelights when dipped or main beam are on.

I have just ordered some xenon look ring bulb's.

Make's life a lot easier.

And for the record i'm not looking for the fog's to match dipped beam colour, because as soon as my sidelight's are activated, the DRL turn's off.

They are factory DRL's.

I think it was a great idea as it ran the rear cluster as well. I prefer it to the setup in my estate with the separate DRL.

Ok to throw a spanner in the work's my dad bought these home from work,so i will need resistor's?

Adding resistors will work just fine, I had them on my mk2 for a few years with no issues.

If our have some spare cash and time, then working out the highest value the BCM will accept is your best bet.

The higher the vale the less heat they will generate and the less electricity you will 'waste'

A 3 ohm resistor rated at 55w or higher will mimic the bulb exactly but will produce a significant amount of heat (55 watts worth).

If you start with a 10 ohm (this will displace 15w) and then increase to 15 ohm (displace 10w) and keep going until you get a bulb out light.

Then pick the highest ohm you can without a bulb out, maplins is your friend on this as they are only around 89p

I put LEDs in the foglights on the Nissan NX. Because the point of origin is not the same, the fogs went from usable to useless instantly.....to the point that they\re not any good as DRLs, even in the dark.

The same tends to happen with most changes like this. A reflector is designed to work with the light originating at a certain point to produce a predictable beam pattern. This forms part of the 'E' approval system.....A+B=C, all the time, every time. Change the point of origin and you change the beam pattern in an unpredictable way. You could blind people or get almost no light out at all.  This is why retro-fit HIDs are useless a lot of the time.....different point of origin gives a different pattern, usually one that "looks cool" but only to the driver, to everyone else.....it's a blinder.

If you want to change the output/function then you're best off with a whole unit designed to to that job (like the LED one in your original post) someone's already taken the time and trouble to make one that does the job. ;) ;) (There's a Scout or two on here with them fitted) Code it in VCDS and change the light-swtich so you no longer have the option of front fogs.

A simple, practical demonstration of point of origin in relation to a reflector.....unscrew the reflector of a torch while it's on and watch the beam change,.

The whole HID thing wasbecause i have some 35w osram ballasts in shed and h1 bulb's.

I will not be chasing it any further as i have bigger plan's.

I just wanted a quick cheap fog light to look more like a DRL in today's light.

I have never been blinded by a DRL in the day.and i don't see an LED or HID bulb doing this.Fog's are aligned to the floor almost.I know that changes with the bulb.

But i really don't see any issue...i know it's not "E" approved or whatever who care's.It's the prat's who drive with them on at night who seem to have your hackles up.

Even the boy's who have converted to led unit from the fabia, why???? you already have a DRL above lol.

I just wanted a whiter look.

Ring bulb's £7.99

Most liekly that people who fit the fabia lights want to use them for extra light at night. When the dipped beam is on most cars turn off or hugely dim DRL's.

I guess you have coded the fogs as drl's?

Unless you are looking at LED's such as the philips Lumiled, these led's you can get on ebay wont be anyware close to HID brightness

I'm happy with what i got.just wanted rid of the really amber look.

And because the one side is very awkward to do,i will not be looking to do anything further.

Just hope i don't dazzle anyone in the daytime   B)
