Retro fit Satnav/Bluetooth

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a 2011 VRS. I am looking to buy an Amundsen RNS 310, I've seen a few on eBay which seem quite good offers.

Would I need anything else to get the Bluetooth and Satnav working or should it just be plug and play?

Thanks,

Simon

You'll need a Bluetooth module. It's not built in to the unit. You'll also need a new dash trim piece as Amundsen is different shape to the Bolero and I expect you'll also need a gps aerial. Some VCDS coding will also probably be needed, especially if you have maxidot. Upgrading from the Bolero is very common and there's loads of info on here about the pros and cons and requirements of the various options.

Thank you Sarge. I read somewhere that it was just plug and play. I'll have a search on the forum for a full install or what have you

It's plug and play in the sense that once the Bolero is out the new unit will just slot in and will work. However you won't necessarily get full functionality and for Bluetooth a separate module and associated wiring with mic. will be required. Some Amundsen units (Amundsen+ IIRC) had Bluetooth built in but not the 310. The other OEM unit you can upgrade to is the Columbus. This has a bigger screen and internal hard drive for music storage.

I'd fit Columbus and a Bluetooth unit.

I did it on my 2012 vrs and it's pretty much plug and play but requires a vcds coding

I didn't realise there was much difference. So if I bought a Columbus and a Bluetooth module I could shove them in, get whatever coding needed doing and then away we go. Is it the coding that makes it come up on the MFD? I don't have a MFSW.

Would the RNS 510 but the correct fit?

Yes I bought the bt unit and Columbus.

The Columbus fits straight in no issues.

The bt unit requires a mic to be run to the holder in the interior light but is plug and play.

Requires coding so you get directions phone etc on the maxidot display.

MFSW is not required as it can be controlled via columbus

Also if you get a later bt unit and have rsap mode on your phone it also sends and receives texts via the Columbus and you can turn the car into a WiFi hotspot

That's sounds cool. Thanks for your help everyone!

Where is the best place to get a Columbus? I've seen some on eBay for around £400. Is that a good offer?

Also, is it difficult to make my steering wheel a multifunction one?

eBay's pretty good be be wary of stolen units and make sure code is with unit.

You can retrofit the MFSW controls but I'm not sure if it's just a case of plugging the switches in and coding or more involved.

Check this thread for some Columbus info, I have a couple of DAB units in stock at the moment.

Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it!

I'm going to go for a BT module on its own to start with then save up for a Columbus in a few months.

Anything I should look out for on a BT module? And the sort of price range? Then how much is coding?
