Faulty head unit?

Featured Replies

I was hoping to get a a little advice, I've had one of those 1 din DVD head units with the motorised screen for about 5 years in my Fabia, and the screen motors packed up, so I decided to get a replacement, practically the same as I had just newer, I've tried to fit it today, and the second the wires in the connector plug made contact the fuse in the head unit blew,

I've changed the loom over, and it blew again, as soon as contact is made, you cannot even get the connector fully in it happens so quick, I put my original unit back in, turns on and plays just fine, ( apart that the screen won't come out) I went back to the new unit, same again! Fuse blew the second connection was made,

I've gone through 5 fuses, and every time it happens in a instant, it has to be a faulty head unit, am I right?

Thanks for any help in this,

Matt.

Yes, it's faulty.

Or the wiring in the connectors is different to the one you're replacing. There should be a wiring schematic for the new head unit, make sure your +ve and -ve are correct etc.

Note he said the fuse in the head unit, not the cars fuse. A wiring problem wouldn't make the head unit fuse blow. The unit is likely faulty yes

Perhaps I should've said "Check all your wiring connections". Fuses blow for a reason, either a fault caused by component failure, or a user generated fault. Simple test to check the wiring is correct and dismiss the possibility of user error. Manufacturers change specification so it's folly to presume that a head unit made 5 years ago complies with the same wiring as one made recently.

Note: ISO connectors are standard connectors, not standard wiring.

But the fuse is in the stereo. The wiring before the stereo couldn't possibly cause that fuse to blow

Okay.

But if you contact the supplier and say it's blowing a fuse when you connect it, first thing they're gonna say is "Have you checked the wiring is correct?". It's not a hard job to look at the wiring and just put that to rest. Just look at the wiring diagrams for both head units side by side and compare them to make sure there's no wiring changes between them. :nerd:
