Bought original xenon headlights - now what? PRE-FL

Featured Replies

Hi all

I recently bought a pair of brand new OEM Xenon headlights for my 2008 Octavia PRE-FL. (A steal at around 60 pounds)

That being said, my car is not born with xenons, so I know that I need washers and auto-leveling (that will come at a later stage)

I just discovered that the headlights are without ballasts and bulbs.

So the question is what do I need order for them to work? I.e. which ballasts can I use and what is the overall cheapest solution?

Thanks in advance :)

Probably doesn't have projectors already.

Most LHD Octavia only got projectors with xenons.

Yup. When I go to Europe most of the Octavias I see have the standard reflector lenses. Then the odd one with projectors but then they have xenons.

Wonder why this was the case?

Probably cheaper for SUK to make a RHD beam pattern for one set of lenses, regardless of whether halogen or xenons are fitted?

But there are quite a few other RHD markets that Skoda sell their cars too, not just UK.

80% LHD iirc

And think that Skoda don't export to all those markets.

Are you sure you have xenon units and not the std projector light units. I know the xenons have motors inside them for the leveling but the std ones could also have them too.

Its easy to find out. Xenon will have D1s fittment and Halogen will have H7 fittment

This is a picture inside the headlight: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cqyir50lkzotkqx/2016-08-07%2020.43.37.jpg?dl=0

. Looks like D1S. Will I need any other cables besides this adapter (https://www.kufatec.de/shop/de/Skoda/Octavia-1Z/Adapter-Xenon-Scheinwerfer-Skoda-Octavia-1Z) from Kufatec? I am wondering how I can connect the ballast?

I'm not sure that is a xenon unit. It looks different inside to mine from what I remember. The xenon also has a movable shutter inside it, in front of the bulb for driving abroad.

Thanks for the input :)  I will have to explore this deeper. Comments are welcome - it does looks like a D1S connector, doesn't it?

Hi all

Just a quick update. Turns out that I HAVE bought original xenon headlights and everything is working as it should, except that only one headlight turns on. When I first mounted the headlights both turned on, but one started blinking rapidly, as if wasn't getting enough volts or something. Now it's just completely turned off. Does anyone know how to solve this matter? The car has been coded to xenons.

Possibly a faulty bulb or ballast?

I'd try switching components from left to right and see if the fault follows one component.

Well. Tested all of it, and it turns out, that the bulb is faulty. Have anyone else had problems with flashing/blinking bulbs when retrofitting OEM-xenons? Ps. I have bought the bulbs on ebay - Philips bulbs, but could this be an issue?

If you've bought them on eBay they are probably fake copies of the original bulbs.

Get them from a reputable source, i.e. local motor factors, Amazon - shipped by Amazon though.

One other option are Morimoto bulbs.

You'd probably have to import them, but they are amongst the best rated bulbs for HID.

Thanks I'll give it a go with some proper bulbs :)

As above most likely to be fake bulbs as I've been stung on eBay with fake bulbs before. If you open the metal cover and then plastic cover you will be able the circuit board, fakes ones tend to be green and cheap looking inside. Also fake ones tend to have plastic cover on the back glued on very tightly to prevent you from checking the insides whereas you can normally prise open genuine covers very easily to check them.

Thanks for the input. My bulbs do look real, though. I've heard that it might be a problem with the wiring. The headlights are simply not getting enough volts, i.e. the resistance is too great. Some guy mentioned something about a relay harness of some sort. Is that fittable on OEM-headlights?
