How hard is a bonnet swap?

Featured Replies

Came home after a week away today and noticed for the first time just how chipped my car's bonnet is. Added to the damaged grille from the previous owner, I'm wondering whether it's worth looking for a new bonnet from a scrappy. How hard are they to remove and fit?

Cheers!

4 bolts and a washer tube. Hardest bit is getting it lined up afterwards, but just a case of adjusting and trying until its right.

What colour is your car? I have a black bonnet in Halifax :)

Do I need to buy anything new for it? How much should I expect to pay for a half decent one at a scrappy?

Mine's in what I think they call Dynamic Blue, thanks though!

It needs 2, or preferably 3, people to fit the new one (2 to hold it both sides, and one to start the bolts).

Its a 1 person job, put cloths in the corner of your windscreen, rest the bonnet over the lifters and onto the cloths, wind the bolts in loosely, and remember to close it slowly the first time incase it really dosent line up and then adjust it until it fits. Easy

That assumes that you:-

  1. Have pneumatic strut "lifters".
  2. Have a reach of about 6 feet so you can hold the bonnet comfortably.
  3. Can do the job inside or on a very calm day.

I read lifters as the actual hinges

Yes, that is what I meant haha

No, when the bonnet is rested on the cloths, just put the prop into the holder, I should of mentioned that.

I'm only small and can managed it on my own, they don't weigh anything, and i do have a garage, but this is very achievable even without 'a very calm day'.

"Lifters" and "hinges" are different things!

If you're resting a whole bonnet on the hinges and windscreen to fit the bolts, what's supporting the weight? The windscreen isn't designed to do it (it's probably strong enough but this is not what it's for) and most of the weight is hung out several feet into fresh air until you get some of the bolts in.

You'll be lucky to find an immaculate one at a scrappy - Might end up in the long run being easier (less hassle) but more money just painting the one you have.

For what you pay for a bonnet adding delivery charges, and still probably still need to get it sprayed the colour of your car.

You might as well have your original bonnet sprayed, you could mark around the hinges where it was bolted-on, and get the refit close to original settings.

Doesn't have to be immaculate because the rest of the car isn't. But the grille has been damaged at some point before I bought the car and so now in one corner of the front of the bonnet, behind the grille, there's a large patch of rust which I'm concerned about. So I guess replacing the bonnet is more about getting rid of the rust + damaged grille in one go. Surely getting the bonnet re-sprayed would make it look more out of place because it would be fresh whilst the rest of the car wouldn't?

Cheers for the advice and tips etc, all.

Sits quite happily on the corners of the scuttle under the windscreen. Sure it's easier with a couple of people if they are about but perfectly possible with care and cloths on your own (strength required).
