Reverse steps you took. Check for any loose wiring or trapped/cut wires or better yet disconnected wires. If in doubt, post a pic, it helps.

I don't know if the mkI Octy has anything clever to detect tamper. It could just be a cruel and very random in a billion fault that's occurring at the same time.

Thanks for replies,ColinD and Tech1e ,l took great care reconnecting the two connectors, although the right hand plug is not easy due to limited loom length.Guss what .its now raining.must be a bad old lad.

I mentioned this because may be some of the pins went wrong. to be more precise: Pin number 2 on Green 32-pin Connector is for reading coil for immobilizer 1 (from 05.99 prod.), and  pin number 17 reading coil for immobilizer 2 (from 05.99 prod.). might be worth checking.

Keys have lost communication with the immobiliser which is why you have flashing key symbol, & the engine shuts down after a few seconds.

You should always disconnect the battery when when working on the cluster to avoid problems like this. Might be worth disconnecting the battery, & re-seating the cluster connectors.

Thanks pauldazzle,l did voice concern on my chrome dial rings and multi function rectangle post but was assured it was ok to disconnect/ reconnect without battery disconnection.l'll study the two American sites you've guided me to.Brilliant.

connector seems fine. did you get a sticker with scratch able part that comes with you spare key? this sticker contains 4-letter pin code you can use for pairing your keys with cluster using vcds.

Hey!! She's running after giving the green socket/connection a lot of sweat and after many warning lights appearing I'm left with the seat belt and low brake fluid lights on. I'm just off on a quick test run ,not far down our lane.

Went ok except brake fluid went out then came back on when did a test restart ,by the way the seat belt light was the airbag light ,my mistake.l have lost faith in the socket connection after this episode,as l thought that it was a 'sorted' design.ls it a case of Father Time?

Yes Arminator ,reluctant as I was but the flexing of the plug partially solved the problem .l'm now left wth the airbag light on continuously , but does momentarily go out on start up .Hopefully my stepson will be able to extinguish on his Vag com/VCDS as mentioned by pauldazzle. Thanks very much to all you guys who responded to my plight.Cheers Vince
