Squeaky load cover in Estate- any fix?

Featured Replies

Its the only squeak/rattle I have- I had this in a previous Audi A4 estate and never fixed it, do you guys have the answer?

how do you mean squeak - is it when retracting and from the 'leading edge' of the cover?  If so I found a small amount of silicon grease / oil on the 'runners' made mine much smoother - either the dielectric grease you get from Maplin or the silicon oil you can get from Wickes for assembling drain runs...

Candle wax works well when rubbing / vibrating plastics start to make a noise..

you know- as soon as you drive on a less than smooth road you can hear the load cover making a noise- it squeals/squeaks and a good few estates I've been in make that noise!

If you know it is definitely the load cover then your description has to be either the mount holders or the lugs that hold the clips to keep the cover closed, or the stiff flap / cover of the tray, or the tray itself, or something inside the tray, if you have one.

Did you follow that???

Try greasing the mount holders and the clips, and maybe remove the tray for a short while, if you have one. If no success try sticking the (tray) flap down to see if it is that.

The times I hear a squeak thinking it is from passenger door, only when I turn my head to realise it is coming from the rear. Possibly same thing but my boot is full of tools so impossible to find the cause.

I have a 2011 FL Estate.  The load cover rattles a lot if it is open whilst driving as the guide lugs flap around the track when it is opened.  It is a lot quiter when it is closed so if I'm driving very far I always close it.

If yours is more a squeek you could try some silicon on the plastic bits and see if it helps solve and/or identify where the problem is.  You could also remove it and refit it and inspect if there is anything obvious amiss.

Wd40 do silicon grease in a spray can. £4 at halfwords.

I wouldnt spray any liquids espescially WD40 AC90 as it will just atract dirt and evapourate.

Post some photos of whats causing the racket???

Agree, keep greases and lubricant spray out of it. Will make a mess of it. You could try some trim protectant or I have used silicone protectant spray sparingly. In both cases I would suggest spraying on a cloth first and only applying a little, to the area of concern and buffing off. I wouldn't just start spraying into areas and crevices and hoping it does the job.  It'll just end up in a mess.
