Dropping the Dirty Diesel...

Featured Replies

Right, I've reached the point of needing to seriously consider rationalising our cars.

SWMBO is a community nurse and drives an Audi A2 1.4TDI as her daily. It's cheap to run, insure etc. But it's getting a bit leggy and the cost of parts & panels in the event of accidents might be an occurring issue.

I drive a 1.6 TDI Golf - yes,the dirty one. With a DSG box, which is due the DSG oil change and major service soon. I've also changed jobs and now only have a 5 mile, inner city commute each way- mpg has dropped from 50+ to barely 30mpg according to onboard trip average each day.

SWMBO is cutting her hours to 3 days in 7 as well.

In this context, we're wondering if running two cars is entirely necessary. And is a diesel worth it, when it's not realistically delivering more mph except on the odd run to Manchester or uk holiday?

LookImg briefly on auto trader with an 8k-9k budget, there's a lot of superminis, but these are not adequate replacement for a DSG Golf.

Any other ideas - I've ruled out EVa due to high costs and battery leases and I will not Readily entertain a French car, though SWMBO is keen on a Citroen Cactus or Nissan Cashcow.

Is there a bus route that suits your new commute?

Running diesel with that low use sounds like a recipe for trouble.

EV too dear? Some used Leaves / Leafs (what would be the plural for Nissan Leaf?) must be getting in your price bracket. BF was reporting that the battery on his was lasting much better than predicted.

Other than that any modest petrol car would suit you. If you can leave style at the door you could get a Dacia nearly new for that price or some Kia or Hyundai car with waranty.

+1  plus Leaf's come off lease almost in batches and don't all have a leased battery   can be a fraction of new with a potential for a lot of life left and before long,  there should be a healthy battery refurb market

Up to £9,000 get you a 2012 Golf 1.4TSI DSG without loads of miles.

Obvious choice is Fabia or Octavia 1.2TSi DSG.

Both will give good economy on your mileage without DPF worries.

Why a DSG oil change though, your 1.6TDi DSG Golf will have a 7 speed dry clutch DSG I believe. They don't require a 40k oil change.

There was me thinking they were 6 speed wet twin clutch.  My bad.

1.2TSI is a great little engine. Moves a Fabia nicely and gets good economy. In fact it is better than our mk1 Fabia vRS on my wife's drive into work.

No DMF or DPF to worry about either.

There's apparently a mix of the types on the VWs.... I've asked the dealership this question when I bought the car.... It's dry, doesn't ever need it. When I went in to enquirer about routine service, they say it needs doing.... Left hand doesn't know what the right is doing....

Did it need doing because of the World Wide Recall which did not include the UK /  EU then the UK Service Campaign VW started in 2014

to change the Synthetic Oil for Mineral and a Software update, or was yours OK and not needing this?

Sell the Golf, put the money in the bank or spend it on something that appreciates rather than depreciates.

Run the DPF'less A2 until it dies, chances are it'll outlive most of us on here.

If you want a VAG petrol car, my advice is to chose wisely and do your research, otherwise you may have a large bill when the engine needs new piston rings or requires replacement

Just lease a new car , there are good deals to be had and you don't have to spend 10k on a rapidly depreciating asset.

Her indoors leases with a 24 month contract , she's on her 4th new car in 7 years

Being aluminium, and possessing suspension hewn from granite blocks, that's very likely....

Have a go in a Toyota hybrid. Chopped my Octy tdi in for one and never looked back.

Agreed. The 1.4 in the A2 is just the venerable 1.9PD with a cylinder lobbed off. Yeah, if it gets crashed, there's no way an insurance company will fix it, but until that happens - why is that even a factor?

Get rid of the Golf, it's trouble waiting for an excuse to happen. Don't get woo'd by any newer VAG group car, they're all going to be bother unless you like paying to keep renting a car you'll never own (sorry folks, it's a mugs game of "keeping up with the Jonses" pure and simple, however you dress it up, unless you're leasing for a business).

If you're only doing 50 miles a week, economy doesn't matter at all, in the slightest, unless you're really skint. The difference between 50mpg and 25mpg is a gallon of fuel a week, so totally forget fuel economy as an issue in your decision.

^^^ Nice.

& you can run a towing & Recovery business with the purchase of a transporter.

Suggestions on something you can buy for around £8,000 that appreciates more than the 1.5% that the Santander 123 Savings Interest Rate is dropping to in November.

Investing in 9 bars for sale or other illegal substances is not a good suggestion really.

That can end up in having your property seized and the lose of your liberty.

So if it is a car there are ones that offer 'free motoring' other than normal running costs if you buy right and have no breakages.

Now there's a controversial quote  :D
