vRS diesel to vRS petrol?

Featured Replies

Has anyone done the change that could provide some words of wisdom?

The Wife's diesel vRS is a fantastic car but it is now coming to the point I need to spend quite a bit of money on it due to its age and mileage. (It's a 2006 BLT engined with 145k miles) ... so we are considering options.

However after looking at lots of alternatives I think she just wants another Fabia ... problem is they no longer do a high performance diesel version if I'm correct? 105ps is the top spec? Given her vRS is 170bhp (mapped) I think the 105ps is going to be far too slow. Which leaves the vRS petrol with the DSG box ... we haven't driven one yet, but plan to do so however how does it compare to the older vRS?

Any help or advice appreciated!

I did it (MKI vRS to MKII) and haven't looked back.

I don't what your budget is but go for a late one if you can - you're less likely to get landed with an oil burner. Even when the manufacturer's warranty runs out you can buy an extended warranty from Skoda at a very reasonable price (irrespective of the twin charger engine I'd take a warranty anyway because of the DSG - major DSG problems are rare but if something does go wrong it'll be expensive).

I've had mine for five years and I've just extended the warranty again - in terms of VFM I think it's hard to beat. I love the DSG but others miss the interaction of a manual.

I've done the change. Did it back in November. I loved my 07 MK1 VRS and even though it only had 80k on the clock I wanted a change (I had it for 5 years)

I saw my 'new' car on a forecourt and test drove it there and then. The DSG is fantastic. The car runs so smoothly. I really don't regret the change.

Few things when buying:

Check it's history. Some of the MK2 drink oil.

Some of them have had DSG oil issues (mine has had it done on warrenty which was done by its previous owner).

The headlights on mine are poor mine are the black projector ones. I've solved this by fitting HIDs.

You won't get the fuel economy that the MK1 gives you. I average abut 38-40.

I'm sure others will tell you their opinions too but like I've said I've not regretted my move. Any other questions just ask.

You can map a Mk2 1.6 TDI CR to 140+ bhp and being a bit lighter than a Mk1 it is really quite nippy.

I sold my mk1 special edition for a mk2 1.6 TDI elegance.

They are very different cars, they feel huge when you first get them, windscreen and dash goes on for ever, feels like you sit quite high up compared to a mk1 as well.

However, I love my mk2! It's around 130 - 140bhp and doesn't have the low down instant grunt of the mk1 so if your wanting to match performance figures I wouldn't get the 1.6 TDI. If you think 140bhp will be enough then go for it but it's not for me, I'm looking at other options to improve that.

Are they too slow to 70mph. or just not quick enough for an overtake?

Budget is approx £6-7k ... which gets an early vRS to around 2012?

I have to admit I've just spent an hour researching and the amount of engine replacements, oil burning issues, DSG issues is certainly giving me concern. With it being an oil burning issue surely it is just a case of checking compression and condition of the spark plugs? Most examples seem to have 30-50k miles on them, so I'm amazed this is affecting them already.

I own a Scirocco 2.0 TDi GT (177) myself and was considering the 1.4 TFSi (160) until I read of the issues... I thought they might have fixed these with the newer 1.4's but it seems this isn't the case and is the main reason they stopped making them in 2014?

The TDI with 140bhp would be ok ... but you dont get the sports suspension, interior, etc.?

Too slow from standing start ... she wants the 'get up and go' of the Mk1 vRS ... I think she has had it too good with her old car... 174bhp, 302lbft and does 60mpg + on motorway. Bonkers it is.

To slow to 70 if your wanting to put a finger on it.

The mk1 would start to lose traction and wheel spin if you accelerate in 1st, 2nd and 3rd if it's damp.

The mk2 does nothing, it mustn't have near as much torque despite "similar" bhp.

Overtaking is fine, once your above 2500 it pulls great until redline. The mk1 would pull strong from 1600rpm in 6th gear if you need it to.

I paid 8k for mine 2013 plate. 17k on the clock with one previous owner. So you're probably not too far off with that mate.

Mr OCD,

they were affected from 2010 in the Seat launched in 2009. and 2010/11 at under 4,000 miles with CAVE engines.

30-50,000 engines might be more recent or at 3-4 years old, the first are 6 years old now.

Early CTHE can still have issues, and then from mid 2013 less so.

The DSG is a Service Campaign, and the Oil change and Software Update on the DSG is Free on DSG that have Synthetic oil in from the factory.

Not all have, that is not a Warranty Repair, Skoda need to keep doing ones not already done.

A Skoda Warranty on a car that has the correct servicing so it will be valid is a good buy.

£6,000 can buy a good Twincharger, it is just a lottery.

You might get one with a new engine, or a 2nd new engine, so that might be worth a buy.

PS

As to Sports suspension, (or Skoda's idea of Sports Suspension) seats etc on a dirty diesel, you get that sort of with a Monte Carlo

or buying a car someone has modified and changed suspension etc, and funnily Briskoda members

are the kind that might advertise one like that in the For Sales.

Then there are members that say when they trade in a good Twincharger, a few have recently.

Great info gents thanks!

Going to look at a vRS and Monte Carlo today.

I have a 2012 with a CAVE engine, and it's now ticked over to about 35k miles and I haven't had any issues with oil or DSG. I've done a few thousand of those in the last couple of months and haven't had to touch the oil at all. By the looks of it, it's a bit hit and miss as to whether you'll get a good'un or a dud. But as previously said, extended warranty is the best thing you can get. The car is a dream to drive. DSG is responsive and reacts well to downshifts, plus sport mode will rev until the world ends. Plus, you can sit at 60/70mph and still get high mpg figures.

Quite surprised how difficult it is to find a vRS ... not a huge amount around. Still not been able to test drive one yet.

Wife isn't keen on Monte Carlo unless its a MK3 ... and thats out of budget unless go down PCP route which I'd rather avoid. (she keeps her cars 5yrs +)

I see there's nothing in the dealer network within a 50-mile radius of Manchester (on Autotrader anyway) - there is a vRS at a Seat dealer but it's had four owners.

There's an earlier one at Lookers Manchester, so you could at least see if it suits - take a test drive etc.

It isn't under the Skoda Approved Used Car scheme though, so it would come with a standard 3 month warranty from Lookers I believe. Something you'd do well to upgrade

^^^

That's the one I was talking about. Four owners would put me off but I don't know what Lookers' rep is like.

It's at Lookers Manchester, which is a Skoda and Seat main dealer, on the same site. Didn't know if was that one you meant.

They're 'OK' there. Not my favourite place to deal with, but if the car is the right one....

Ask the Salesperson at Lookers if somebody pinched the Black side protection mouldings, and what is automatic about the headlights.

Then get them to knock £500 off the price and put a Skoda 12 month warranty on it.

Ask for the print out of the Service & Warranty history.

We phoned about that one ... they couldn't find it on their systems so we turned up anyway. After being ignored for 40 minutes we walked off and went to VW who were happy to help as soon as we were spotted viewing several VW Beetles! (Don't ask)...

She is still pushing me to fix the Mk1 though ... :/

Have you checked Simpsons Colne? I was in there last week and saw a 12 plate.

I feel like the odd one out here but I'd have the diesel back in a  heartbeat.

The new one (2014) hasn't missed a beat and we've had none of the horror issues with it (DSG, oil etc...) but for my tuppence worth I just prefer the old version. It felt more planted (being diesel it's heavier of course) and in my humble opinion was just a nicer car to drive.

TBF I don't get to drive it very often as her ladyship guards the keys but I just don't think it's as fun to drive either  :notme:

I thought I would update this ... the Wife was faffing about with what to do so I took matters into my own hands and test drove a late 2011 vRS with 24,000 miles, one owner from new and full skoda history. It has the CAVE engine ... keeping the story short I loved it and put a deposit down on it but not without checking it over carefully and getting a decent warranty with the car.

Collect tomorrow. :)

It's getting serviced, checked, etc. as priority but my gut feeling is it's a good one. Goes like a train!

Enjoy.

Worth buying the Warranty available from Skoda.

Maybe under £300 for 12 months.  By then you will know if it is a good one, if not you have that Warranty as a back up.
