96.1 mpg !

Featured Replies

My new Superb had a baptism of fire this weekend, enjoying it's first 350 miles loaded to the hilt with it's enormous boot crammed full of our camping gear and the whole family on board and the tank brimmed.

Driving with no regard for economy, suffering traffic jams, comfort breaks and driving at the speed limit - all with a fresh and tight engine, I was very impressed with 65.4 mpg...

Which then left me wondering what it was actually capable of when lightly loaded, driving with maximum economy in mind.

This afternoon I was returning home from a meeting on quiet A roads and tried my best to eek as much from it as possible, just to see what it was capable of.

I was amazed when 57 miles later I saw 96.1 mpg!

Pretty amazing by any measure.

What engine do you have?

2.0 TDI 150 manual

Fantastic going mate, you can't argue with that.  I can't help notice the MY17 have tweaked the UI software, as you can now see the GreenScore on the details screen. NIce improvement! I wonder if we'll get this as a routine software update during the first service? It's nice to hope haha

Come on that's a Photoshop isn't it ????

Please tell me it is .... !

Nope - no photo shop here - I'm not that good!

I noticed when the display was on instant that cruising around in 4th gear at about 35 mph, treating the throttle like it was wired to a hair trigger, it was recording about 115 mpg.

That was a journey full of long smooth A roads with the speed varying between 30 and 50 mph, driving absolutely as carefully as I possibly could, never seeing more than 1,500 rpm in any gear, coasting to he max, anticipating gaps in roundabouts etc.

Just shows you though.

I believe that it is perfectly capable of averaging long term high 60's, maybe even 70 mpg in time.

I drive about 26,000 miles a year so I'll know soon enough.

Oh, I might add that I've been practicing maxing out mpg figures for years and if I say so myself, am pretty darn good at it. I've been able to significantly exceed the manufacturers claims on every car I've had, including a Lexus Hybrid!!

Dont worry, when your dealer mechanics get their hands in, I'm sure they'll fix it for you. Compulsory software update sir, nothing to do with us. 45mpg is good for a car this size sir,.....

Reading around online I'd have been generally inclined to agree with you. However as a MY17 the OP's car would already have the 'fix', I would imagine?

With over 200 miles to do today, I thought I might nip the 100 mpg mark, but alas, traffic conditions rendered it out of the question. The M6 saw me in stop start traffic for over half an hour and my average speed plummeted, which along with lots of round town driving each end killed any chance of the milestone.

However, given the poor driving conditions, I reckon 80 mpg over 200 miles is still pretty amazing, nonetheless.

What is astonishing is that I'm set to get over 1,050 miles range from it's 66 litre tank which will officially confirm the tank average at over 70 mpg!

I definitely have petrol in my veins (at least since the transfusion :D), but I have to admit for stomping up and down the motorway all day that is one helluva tool for the job. To be fair I'd just use the 80mpg to justify 10mpg from my weekend toy, but that really is good going.

10 MPG? Weekend toy?

I reckon I could beat that - I go through a fuel cell of E85 every few runs, although they tend to be 1/4 of a mile at a time. :D

Ace. That's some going.

Where's the fuel gauge at then now ?

No point you joining @Nick_H's worst MPG thread then!

And I thought I was doing OK with ~48mpg. I almost wish I'd gone with plan A now (manual 150).. impressive stuff.

Not as good as you.. But my school run, nuresey drop off in traffic this morning at slow speed ... Impressive for such a low avg speed and from cold.

It's still showing 3/8 full.

I thought rather than trust on board software, I'd measure MPG the 'old school' way on my Superb III 2.0 TDi 150PS SE L Executive, manual, i.e fill tank too the brim until fuel pump clicks off, note the odometer reading, drive a few hundred miles and then fill tank to the brim again and distance travelled and note fuel used.  A bit of simple maths later and you get the true MPG. Well, a pretty continuous drive across Portugal and Spain of 556 motorway miles, heavily loaded (wife + suitcases + lots of bottles of wine!), ac on with outside temp well over 30C and not exactly taking it easy, used 51.05 litres of fuel. By my calcs that gives 49.5mpg.  Sadly I forgot to zero the 'Infotainment' system to get the car's version of events - but will definitely do so on the next long run and post the comparison.

Suggest anyone who's convinced themselves they're getting 80 to 100mpg from a 2 litre diesel driven under normal conditions might want to try a manual sanity check of things!

I've found onboard computers can vary somewhat - My Superb I was about 4mpg pessimistic! , Fiat Panda is about 10% optimistic but the 1.4tsi Superb II is reasonably accurate

I use http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/ to do the long term reasonably accurate brim to brim calculations (http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/720963.html)

Many on this forum use http://www.fuelly.com/ - but I couldn't find my model/engine on this site

The since refuel option is a good one to use when you also do a manual check.

I brimmed my tank week or so back... and reset the trip on the dash.

The miles covered mirrors the OBC since refuel.

When i brim it again i will also do the man maths to see if they are the same / close.
