Important changes to booster seat law

Featured Replies

Only applies to new products on the market though. So unlikely that anyone currently using a booster is going to change anything.

Applies to 'use' so includes seats already out there.

Like the smoking ban in commercial vehicles, or with kids in the car there will be zero enforcement anyway

So the statement "The new regulations should come into effect in December 2016 but will only apply to any new products on the market." actually means that any booster seat will no longer be approved for use?

I like how under the "faq" "what is the new law" at the end of the article they only detail the current law...

I personally dont like the booster seats either, for mostly the reasons outlined in that - lack of any body/head restraint in the event of an impact.

Also the number of isofix failures and the load limit (18kg as its all the mounting points are rated to) put me off when getting spuderick's new seat (erf axkid minikid) following ALOT of reasearch. Its bulky, but it fits in the citigo in the back seat and still comfy enough as a front seat passenger (though if your tall it may be a little less so)

Another thing i disagree with - imo the age restriction is crap. It should based on physical size for any minor (under 17) why does a child who may be 12yrs old but less than the height restriction suddenly no longer need the booster, when they did due to their height when they were 11yrs 364days old??

From the link the new restriction applies to all -

Under the new rules, backless booster seats will only be approved for use for children taller than 125cm and weighing more than 22kg.

From the link, I lifted that quote that the new regulations will only apply to new products on the market. Now it makes little difference to me as my days of child seats etc. are in the past, but either it applies to all existing booster seats, or it applies to all new products. It could well be a journalistic ploy to create confusion about the story and make it more interesting, but I'd be interested to see how only applying to new products on the market can also include existing products. Rather like seat belts in the sixties it became compulsory to fit seat belts to all new cars, but the existing cars without the anchorage points were allowed to continue to be used.

Theres is a whole of not much in that article tbf..

i havnt looked into it beyond that as its a while away for me to be thinking about, and ROI seat laws are diferrent anyway..

The RoSPA link below offers clarification on the legality of exising booster seat cushions.

* Change to the law about booster cushions

The regulations about booster cushions are being reviewed and may change so that booster cushions will only be approved for use for children taller than 125cm and weighing more than 22kg. However, no decisions have been made yet, and a date for the change has not been set (some reports say December 2016, but this is not confirmed).

If the changes go ahead, they will only apply to newly sold booster cushions, not ones which are already in use and meet existing safety standards. So, parents who use old booster cushions that comply with the existing regulations will not be breaking the law if they continue to use them after any rule change. They will not be required to buy new booster seats to meet any rule change.

Hmm need to let my sis know.

We've used a booster seat as an 'emergency' seat when we get caught out. It was handy to have one to throw in a car at short notice.

Will pick up a basic full seat instead.

I use a Recaro Monza in the car. It's a big bulky ****e of thing and real PITA to take in and out but the material quality felt much better than other seats.

Was looking at the monzas, it was too bulky for the citigo... and not rear facing ..
