Pictures of Fabia vrs turbo setup

Featured Replies

I am thinking about top mounting my turbo next year, I was wandering if anyone had done it? or had even tried something different to the normal setup! Post you picture below

This is one of darkside's Compound turbo setups! Inspiring

It would be an interesting looking custom intake pipe...

Would there be clearance between the head of the engine and the bulkhead?

I'm intrigued to know why you wish to fit it in such a way, is there any gain? As I can imagine it costing a hell of a lot more due to it's rarity.

How I figured it was that if you clock the turbo inlet so its straight up the pipe would just go straight in from the top apposed to going all the way round and underneath, then the bottom hose that goes tot he intercooler would have to be made so it was longer and the downpipe would have to be extended to reach the exhaust. I will be modifying the panel at the back anyway this year to maybe all that would be needed there is a notch.

The main reason is that not many people have done it, I will be having all of the boost pipes remade anyway, I was also thinking about upgrading the inlet too, and the top-mounted one from profidiesel is the same price and flows to 300+bhp.

Just trying to get a feel of whats out there already

I was about to ask about the downpipe too, which as you say would have to be elongated to mate up to the higher position.

Have you a good exhaust fabricator to sort that problem, or have one lined up as I suspect it is a one off kind of thing. The boost pipes as least will be fairly easy to replace and alter, plenty of different joints reducers and lengths available.

I don't know of any others setup as you describe, that doesn't mean to say it can't be done reasonably smoothly.

Best of luck and I look forward to seeing progress

I have given it a good amount of though, the dowpipe would just need extending so an easy job really, I have been recommended to someone who is supposed to be really good, and i will be having hopefully 1 piece boost pipes which will eradicate potential boost leaks.

This was the only setup I have ever seen

Obviously the flange where the turbo bolts on would need chopping off and spinning round that way you could run the intercooler pipes/downpipe the OEM direction

But i dont forsee a problem, I need to get my engine out and start mocking things up to see how viable it is.

Why would you even consider going to all this trouble unless you're planning on fitting a turbo so huge that it can't physically be mounted in the usual location, I can see the reason Darkside have done it with their Biturbo setup, and the dustbin lid sized item in the photo above wouldn't physically fit either but such a colossal turbo simply wouldn't be 'streetable' and the sheer number of supporting mods would make it prohibitively expensive to develop.

We've had a few members vanish down the 300bhp rabbit hole and hardly any have returned with an engine that didn't smash pistons, blow head gaskets and eat clutches and gearboxes for fun.

Why not? Because I am getting all the boost pipes remade anyway, why not got that little further, Besides the fact that it would look mint, I may aswell, Mainly because the fact that I want to.

The engine itself is already built (xaviers old car) I will just be adding a few things to it myself, Having a shaved engine bay, Everything has to be just right. Plus it will be different, because to my knowledge not many other people have done it.

I didn't really start this thread to gather opinions, Just to see if anyone had been more creative than normal.

What about mounting it where the air box and battery are?

I did consider that, but i like the open space where that is, I would prefer it to be central to the engine think, I know that darkside have a mk4 with that setup and I can imagine it being difficult to get an equal length manifold made

I think it'd be a decent set up, I'll give it a go myself if I get the chance.

As for the top mounted idea, would you have to sacrifice some of the bonnet to make it fit? I'm all for something different and since its not your daily car can't see why not

I do aswell, just not on my car, I highly doubt it, I will have to take a chunk out of the scuttle panel at the back, which is getting modified anyway this year, When the lump is out I will experiment with it, and if its not a viable option i wont do it.

I just mocked this up very quickly on my dinner by chopping a load of google images together but you will get the idea

Does it not get in the way of the inlet? Or is there some way around that issue

it would all depend on the shape of the manifold, Like i say, just brainstorming so far

Should be a fun project

If you are doing it, good luck to you. I agree it will look great as a show car or somthing.

But on the other hand, i wouldn't bother either... not much to gain from it, will probably end up losing BHP over it and spending alot of money on something that could have been spent somewhere els?

- Downpipe will be an issue

- Oil feed will need to be custom / braided

- Oil return will need to be custom made from somthing decent to run between the exhaust manifold.

- lack of space will become a problem i think

Hairy muff.

What's a 'shaved' engine bay please, this is 'show' and not 'go' talk which to me is a foreign language I'm afraid.

If you have a look through my great you will find out, again, if you have a look through my thread you would know that this isn't just show, the engine is 282hp.

Oil feed shouldn't be a problem, braided lines can be had easily enough. The return shouldn't be too much of a problem either, could use a long length of flexi perhaps?

The room may be an issue - but Skodalad is just sketching ideas as of yet...

As jrjg said, gettin custom pipes made up isn't really a problem, but I think you had a valid point about the space, I will keep you update once I try a few thing out.

In regards to spending money else where, there isn't anything else that hasn't been touched, just working on the power/look of the engine

You're being WAY too touchy, how does a 'shaved' engine bay contribute to the 282bhp? I suspect it doesn't which means it's for 'show' and not for 'go', which is fine but I still don't have a clue what you're talking about and I'd happily read your 'great' thread if you'd only linky for me. FFS is it really too much to ask?

You clearly have way too much time on your hands, I'm sure a guy of your intelligence could find it.

That's true, I'm signed off until next week.

So your setting it up something like this?? :

Nice, Polski pikey mods, love 'em. Tractor pulling tuners take on turbos, no air filter or exhaust, just raw pollution, wind it right up then let it go.
