Frequent EGR Valve related faults

Featured Replies

Hi!

So I have a 1.6 TDI that's done less than 35k miles since 2011, but since April this year (bought in January) it's had 3 faults relating to the EGR Valve. All 3 faults have had the glow plug warning light flashing, with the car going into limp mode until being turned off and re-started which resolves the issue for a few miles.

The car has been twice to my local dealership in Warrington and it's had a new EGR Valve fitted, new pressure sensors and even had the DPF regenerated. The last time it went in was August, where it had the new EGR valve.

However, the same fault has occured over the past 2 days. I find it hard to believe it's the EGR Valve again. The car does 60 miles 4 days a week on the motorway, so it's not as if it's just bumbling around town It does get good daily runs.

Spoken to Skoda in Warrington who claimed this regular issue was "unheard of". So have any other TDI owners had frequent issues surrounding the glow plug warning light? (glow plug light is flashing, in amber, no other warning lights. Car starts fine, no odd noises form engine, revs fine and idles okay).

Cheers,

you need to get the fault codes,

see if someone with vagcom is near you and can scan it for you, flashing glowplug light can be so many things

Same symptom of the light flashing but maybe not the same cause.

It could be one of many things, I suspect the low mileage isn't helping.

If I'm reading his post right he's doing 240 miles a week (60miles each day for 4 days) which seems a reasonable enough mileage.

Less than 34k since 2011 though, so there maybe a fair bit of crud in the EGR system

That's very true. What else in the EGR System would need to be cleaned / replaced?

I have the same car same same symptoms.

It was showing egr fault in my case the egr it's self was ok. It was traced to a loose wire in the egr loom. New loom and all was ok

Thanks for all the replies,

The car does at least 240 miles a week.

Trouble code is P046C which it has had before and, to my knowledge, was solved by replacing sensor A when the EGR was replaced.

We did take apart part of the EGR system by removing the small, bent metal pipe at the front right of the engine, the one that curves from the side of the block to the air intake (right hand side of the car, next to the black plastic air intake pipe) and found it to be thick with soot. Upon further investigation, the pipe/tube in the right-hand side of the block ( you can look down it when standing directly infront of the grill) was also coated in soot to a depth of a few millimetres. I was able to get some wire through the pipe we removed, so it wasn't blocked.

Could this be part of the problem, the soot build-up?

The key point here is that while now the car is being driven 60 miles a day four days a week up to last year the car only covered ~30000 miles in 4-5 years so ~125miles a week.

If at least a couple of decent length journeys a week not so bad but if mostly shorter urban journeys this could explain the soot found in the pipes.

With the EGR replaced, and presuming the replacement is not faulty, the root cause is elsewhere but somehow triggering the ECU to think the EGR is faulty. Significantly restricted exhaust gas flow is a possibility as is a leak somewhere, could something not be properly sealed / seated after the EGR replacement?

With regards tonthe low mileage, I've had a look at the service history:

Car is registered between March 1st / August 31st 2011.

May 2013 = 7500 miles

January 2016 = 24100 miles

April 2016 (my first service at Skoda) 25500 miles with.

Is this relatively low the mileage the route of the problem?

And, is there a way to flush out the Egr system to remove all the soot?
