Upgrading from Swing...

Recommended Posts

Ahhh - the contractor they refer to is not what you think. Its a Mafia "Contractor". I hear the bill for a dealer retrofitting a Columbus is so nasty that an enforcer is always brought in to extract the payment.

(Being serious though - I would think the way to go is to procure the needed parts from a trusted source like rustynuts (I wonder why he doesn't just oil them?) and see if someone on Briskoda who has done this could help. I heard of people being quoted 2600 euro to go from the base unit to a Columbus)

I replaced a Bolero with a Columbus myself a few months ago, and it took all but 20 minutes to fit it, and then another short trip to an acquaintance with a VCDS to actually code it to the car. In my case everything worked out of the box, except for the display of the SatNav Instructions on the MFD. That's the part that VCDS coding resolved.

GPS Aerial went behind the HU, and works very well.

wouldnt it be nice if everything had a definitive answer........... yes or no, left or right, black or white...

:envy:

It does have a definitive answer, you just need to check what antenna your car has...

The antenna will have some number of coloured fakra connectors, the colours will tell you what functions it has:

- black DAB

- purple GSM

- blue GPS

- white AM/FM

- biege webasto

If it is the correct sharkfin, you'd probably still need an extension cable between the antenna and headunit: http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/roof-antenna-8/oem-gps-extension-cable-for-roof/

I really wouldn't worry as the worst case is adding an antenna like this: http://www.carsystems.pl/gps-antenna-90-angle-blue-fakra-connector,id18.html

My car doesnt have satnav or DAB, why has it got a sharkfin?

Some cars can have dummy sharkfins (Skoda part 1K0035507L) and you can also have a Sharkfin if your car came without NAV or DAB etc but did have  "GSM/mobile phone preparation" (Skoda part 3C0035507M)

See here for OEM dummy sharkfin: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/GENUINE-VW-VOLKSWAGEN-DUMMY-FIN-FINN-ROOF-AERIAL-1K0035507L-/381516802782

See here for phone prep only sharkfin: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Original-Antenne-VW-Audi-Seat-Skoda-3C0035507M-GSM-Handy-Telefon-Dachantenne-/361265643832

With the Swing Radio I would suspect that the aerial would be the sharkfin for phone preparation. Do you have Bluetooth? That would indicate it.

The other place to check is that model ode/engine code/paint code and options sticker in your handbook or the sticker near your spare tyre area. If you see a code other than 9W0 (which is "without phone preparation) that is in the format "9W" followed by a number other than zero, then you have "phone preparation" or similar and it would explain a non dummy sharkfin on a car without Nav or DAB.

That's not a full list of PR codes for your vehicle.

Anyway, from that list the interesting ones are 7Q0 and 9ZG which would suggest the sharkfin part number is 3C0 035 507 M. This is only for GSM.

Ideally you want 3C0 035 507 N which should be GSM and GPS.

There is no guarantee the M rev part is fitted as it'll depend what the factory had when building your car. The only way to be sure is to physically check what is fitted...

With early or basic systems, the BT just acts as as a hands-free (in other words, it connects to your phone like a Bluetooth headset would - or phone to car audio just like you said).

With the fancier modules, they have an independent GSM module (like a built in dedicated phone) that takes over your phones SIM card (this is the rSAP - remote SIM access profile).

When it takes over the SIM (you were right about that) - it then uses the Sharkfin aerial to get the GSM signal. That can be good as it should be less likely to lose a connection.

That said, the Superb can only "take over" if the phone you own supports rSAP.  If you have a Windows or an Apple iPhone you are snookered as they dont support rSAP.  Then, you connect to the car via a little Bluetooth aerial in the cars module and your phone manages the GSM connection heavy lifting.
