Daytime Running Lights - yet again!

Featured Replies

Has anyone successfully installed daytime running lights such as those from Phillips on a Roomster (or Fabia mark 2?).  Installation seems simple enough.

The problem I see is that the front of the Roomster/Fabia Mk 2 is highly curved so the LED panels would point outwards at about 20 degrees if installed where the fog lights would go (if there were any). Ideally, a wedge-shaped mount for the LED strip would solve the problem.

Any suggestions welcome - yes, go on and make sarcastic comments about DRLs blinding you if you must ...

Welcome to Roomster ownership. Why not just drive with your normal lights on?

Hi "Walter". I fitted some of these, but the four bulb ones, they are a lot easier to fit, not being so long.

I did have some fitted in the grill at first ,but now have mine where the fog lights are.

There are some pic's on the site somewhere, but its toooo late to search now.

Kufatec do a loom to fit the original ones

It was something I was looking at when I had my roomster

But to be honest the cost of retrofitting oe ones was over the top and I didn't fancy fitting aftermarket kits as I think they can look tacky no offence to anyone who has them

The Fabia and Roomster models with DRL fitted have a switch just above the fusebox - so surely a retro fit can't be too difficult?

I quite fancy doing this to my Scout so that the fogs come on as DRLs

Would that be fogs without headlights? I think that's an MOT fail.

Maybe ... but it doesn't seem to stop most Mini and Subaru drivers round here ...

Re MINI's & Fog lights.

Those BMW MINI have a DRL down where Fog Lights usually are and the are split Horizontally.

I have yet to see a MINI with Fog lights on where the Side Lights / Headlights are not on.

Then Subaru can have Driving Lights down low, which are not Fog Lights operating without sidelights on.

(Mk2 Fabia vRS DRL's / Sidelights are often mistaken for Fog Lights, but then Skoda never fitted Fog lights to the front.)

*Highway Code and all that stuff about Reduced Visibilty, switch off when there is no Fog, That is Front & rear.*

It shouldn't be, fog lights are designed to be used instead of headlights and it is absolutely legal to use them that way.  My understanding is that the side lights and rear lights do have to be on, though.

Using fog lights as DRL's is also highly questionable as fog lights should only be used when visibility is less than 100 yards.  If there are additional bulbs used as DRL's mounted within the fog lights that should be fine, however.

Worth re-reading your Highway Code.

Rule 226.

You must use headlights when visibility is reduced etc etc, you may also use front and rear fog lights etc etc

Odd how many think that Sidelights and Fog lights are what is right to use.

But then when in serious fog it can be best to try the headlights off, but if the fog is that bad maybe finding someplace safe off the road is the best plan.

Rule 235 for driving in Fog does say 'Use your lights as required',

so that will cover see and be seen, and allow going to sidelights and fog lights if that is what is required due to the conditions.

That's where the HC is less than 100% correct; the underlying law specifically does allow the use of sidelights + foglights in fog or falling snow when visibility is under 100m.

Does not really allow for the Cornering Fog Lights that have one come on Automatically when there may be no Fog or poor visibility.

Or even worse sometimes, Automatically Front Fogs coming on as the driver selects reverse.

EU Legislation & Use & Construction & the UK Highway Code not current on how vehicles are now in 2016, and how many drivers need 'Special Needs Lighting.'

Who cares if they dazzle others.

Same with some Stop Start systems and DSG's etc and drivers sitting with their foot on the brake pedal when stopped for a long time in Traffic with others behind.

Rainy days etc.

All stuff that annoys me too, particularly "cornering snake oil lights" which do not work as claimed because they put a bright pool in your near field and actually reduce your range of vision as a result!

These lights are so **** it makes no difference ...

And breathe ... :)

Actually i sigh.

I do that every time i see some muppet that think having Fog Lights on looks cool, or looks like they have DRL's.

I wonder what is in their brain when they have them to the front as DRL's and it is lighting up weather,

and those that need front Fogs on with cars in front of them in clear view, or those with none on to the rear and visibility is very poor.

It's idiots with fairy light DRL's on dark mornings who don't have the brains to work out they are showing no lights at the rear that wind me up.

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations are the source of the actual information.

The whole point of fog lights is to illuminate the road without illuminating the fog, as that light gets reflected back into your eyes very efficiently.  Therefore if you have your headlights on as well you will get no benefit from the fog lights because the light from your headlights is being reflected back at you and blinding you.  Mind you, the way that vehicles seem to be set up leaving the factory means that the front fog lights need to be properly adjusted before they are of any practical use.  I suppose that the up side of that is that those morons using fog lights as 'bling' lights don't cause quite so much dazzle.

Those of us with some experience of driving in dodgy visibility know what works.  Unfortunately, due to the ****-eyed way that VW switchgear is set up, we are denied the daytime option of headlights only plus rear fog lights.  It's fogs both ends if you need the rears.

That's all true; my comments about foglights dazzling your near field relate to their misuse in clear conditions (include all so-called "cornering lights" here).

Mercifully, in daylight fog the use of "heads + fogs" doesn't really adversely affect anyone because the general light level is high, and you're trying to achieve the maximum illuminating range from your lights so that other people see you soonest.
