Decision time...

Featured Replies

First off, Hi all! First time poster and all that...

Right, I am in the market for a new car and have taken quite a shine to the Superb. I expect I'm going to be looking for a used model as my budget doesn't quite stretch to new prices, and as far as I can see, within my requirements I have two choices - the 2.5TDi and the 2.8.

I currently have the 2.5TDi out on a 24 hour trial, which I will sadly have to hand back later today, and have been very impressed with the car "as a whole" although ideally I would like a model with an auto box, mostly because I'm quite lazy but also I think the car just suits it!

The loan car has the top spec as far as I can see (full leather, sat nav, auto wipers etc. etc.) and I would be loathe to take a step backwards from this although accept that after market sat nav units can be fitted easily.

But, and this is quite a big sticking point, I am mostly unsure as to which engine I should look for. In the majority I don't cover that many miles on a day to day basis (30 mile round trip to work, mostly dual carriageway), with the occaisional business trips to god knows where. I really am your typical 10-12K miles a year guy!! I would ideally like something which has a bit of poke to it, both off the block and for overtaking. I realise from reading this forum that many of you fine folk are quite adept at adding mod chips etc. to improve the performance of your TDi's but a) I'm not and B) there is a very real chance that once I had the car I wouldn't have the time to take it somewhere to get remapped. So yes, I'm looking for the best "out of the box" performance.

I hope this is enough information to get your grey cells ticking away for me. Any information / advice you can provide would be greatfully received!

Many thanks!

hi, have my 1.9TDi 130 for about 6mths now, and having changed from an Octavia vRS thought it a touch slow at 1st, but now, really dont think most people would need anything more than the 130. Plenty of pull from low revs, and can move on when u sink the pedal a bit, not tried it with an auto box myself, but chatted with a guy yesterday who has and says he loved it. You will be hard pushed to find a better / more comfortable car out there, and thats before yyou consider the value for money aspect of it all. Keep us posted on how your search goes

The pull on the thing at low revs is very impressive, there is no doubt about it!

I guess I'm just looking for people's personal experiences really, so thanks for that!

One thing I have noticed is that it is possible to read far too many reviews of things!!!! ;)

Probably best to drive the 2.8 and the 2.5,both as tiptronics as they are both great cars but I would say it is down to personal preference.I personally have the 2.8 tiptronic and love it although many share the same view about the 2.5

hi m8

having had my superb new from sept 05 i can say i am well impressed.

superb 1.9pd elegance.....black magic with full ivory leather.

very very comfy...extremly roomy as well....

economy.... clocked 49.5 mpg on trip to glasgow last wk.....get this often....usually around the 44-47 mark on distance.

round town...aver ...39-43 !.

pulling power good from low...but there is the tell tale slight lag...just for a about 1 second then whoosh......if you can over come this then now probs..

was gonna go for the auto box myself but...the extra

Hi and welcome

I have a 2.5V6 Superb Elegance with tiptronic gearbox and am very impressed with it. Plenty quick enough for me. The 2.8 has a faster 0 to 60 time and has more horses but the 2.5 has more grunt (i.e. torque). That shows where you need it most. It is very good at accelerating from 40 or 50mph, so overtaking is a doddle.

Mpg is much better on the 2.5, being diesel. I have a heavy right foot (just love that acceleration) and drive (a little) quicker than I should. I can get 39 or 40mpg on a run and average 35. I know that people with a lighter right foot can get much better than these from the 2.5.

Looking at a recent Parker's guide the 2.8 appear to depreciate more than the 2.5 I bought mine when it was 18 months old and got a good deal, but could have bought an equivalent 2.8 cheaper.

Personally I would go for the 2.5. I have not regretted buying mine at all. Build quality is as good, if not better than my E class Merc and the dealers are cheaper and less snobby. If you want a big easy comfortable reliable economical motorway cruiser at a good price and with loads of toys and goodies you really can't beat it at the moment..

I've just bought (last Saturday) a 1.9 TDi Elegance Auto and like you, was after something with a bit of poke. Had my eye on the 2.5 TDi - there was one in Birmingham which was a good price.

However, drove them both and was very impressed with the 1.9's power and acceleration, and when weighing up the cost of fuel between the two, and the probable extra cost of the 2.5 in maintenance across the car's lifetime (2 cylinder heads, complex exhaust, more difficult to access components etc), I plumped for the 1.9.

I've just come from owning a 3.0 V6 Omega - great car, but the bills associated with any work on the engine were crippling, which is why I'm happier with an inline 4.

No regrets - the 1.9 breezes past traffic when overtaking so that's my recommendation.

plus the PD130 plus a 400 quid remap gives around 180-190BHP whilst retaining economy...

Even if the remap is out of the question for you, I think the PD130 really suits the Superb. (I say this as an Octavia 1.8T owner who has driven a PD130 Superb a couple of times).

Had my 130Tdi Comfort 3 years in march. Absolutely no regrets. Test drove 2.5 and not much different except more refined. Looks like it may be 2.5 tip this time?

Already discounted Octy Vrs (excessive road noise) Focus ST (small boot). New Passat, no bigger than Octy and loads more dosh!

May go either Comfort again with 2.5Tdi Tip, or Elegance with 2.0 140TDi 6 speed manual.?? Difficult decision.:D

Hello, Hello, Hi and Thanks!

Having just dropped the car back to the dealers after its test, I couldn't stand getting back into my old heap...

Many thanks for the advice guys, appreciate it. Looks like several of you are thinking of upgrading to the 2.5 with Auto, so I'm guessing that might be my best option... to be honest its what others have recommended to me. Some of them were Audi drivers too.

Everyone realises that you're basically buying a VW / Audi hybrid, but without the premium tacked on the end for the name. Plus the dealers have been nothing but friendly and helpfull to me, unlike the Audi guys who didn't give me the time of day!

Keep the advice coming!

TDi's always hold their value better than big petrol engined cars, sot less to run and these days what with mroe traffic, more cameras and more queing in towns disel si the way to go with a dailt driver!

Plus as mentioned the PD130 is ripe for a bit of re-mapping for extra Ooomph!!

:)

I used to be the owner of an Octy vRS. Did the usuals to it, remap, filter, exhaust, inlet pipe and thought the car could not be beaten in term of drivability and fun.

Changed for a 2.5 TDi Superb about 5 months ago now, and although I do miss my old vRS, the Superb beats the vRS in every aspect. Comfort, Size, Economy, and even though I only have a Green Panel Filter at the moment, I still feel it has as much get up and go as my old vRS, but you just glide over the road so smoothly. Its a Top Car. :D

Many thanks for the extra info! Just as a matter of interest, what is a Green Panel Filter? Apologies but I just don't have a clue...
