New octy windscreen creaking!

Featured Replies

Morning All.

I had a quick scout around and couldn't find a thread for this.

I've got a new octavia, now on 5800 miles.

I've been noticing a creaking noise, sounds like glass on glass. I originally put it down to small stones hitting the windscreen, but now the days are colder it's doing it while stationary too. I think it's the windscreen flexing/expanding and contracting and creaking. I have three barely visible stone chips along one side of the screen, but the noise is all over the screen.

I'm coming up to the end of the 6000 mile unlimited warantee (IIRC), and I'm worried that if it spontaneously shatters I'll be left with the costs of replacing the screen and recalibrating the lights and wiper sensors and lane assist cameras.

Has anyone else experienced this? and did your dealership do anything about it?

Regards

Rob

Do you have a sunroof? There are issues with these.

No, no sunroof, for me it's only the front windscreen.

What issues are they with the sunroof?

Creaking, mine only has 6k miles and it's doing it, and a colleague has a Leon FR ST, it also creaks. Dealer for his car has only tried lubricating seals, it doesn't fix anything long term. Colder weather more recently has exaggerated it I think.

I'm not that bothered tbh, it's annoying, but can wait until it's first visit to the dealer, as the nearest dealer to me is 3/4 hour away and they've been a waste of time with previous warranty issues on another car.  :dull:

Taking the easiest thing first, it could be emanating from the base of the screen on the inside where it touches interior trim/dash

Ive got an octy 3 with sunroof and heated screen and no noises from them so I'm not sure if this is a common problem.

Having replaced screens on other cars then they are bonded in place and the inner side of the glass does touch a rubber seal or areas with felt on to negate any noise.

Creaking is caused by movement. There's either a constituent or a peripheral part causing the issue; it may even be a bond (or installation) failure on your windscreen.

Get the car back to Skoda.

Don't worry about the screen shattering. It won't. It's laminated.

It's likely to be windscreen trim, my screen was replaced and unfortunately there is definitely a noise or two extra when the weather gets colder. No problem at all as long as the temp is above 7-8 C and that goes for some other trim. On the whole I really like my car but considering the extra cost over my MkII I don't feel Skoda have moved on in some areas. At least when my MkII vents creaked a bit in winter I knew that was the only rattle or unwanted noise that it would produce.

My sunroof can creak when the temperature creeps down towards -10deg C. But it stops as soon as the car gets warm.

Never had creaking from the windscreen.
